Spiders Fall To ODU At Anne Donovan Classic
12/19/2019 | Women's Basketball
NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team had a cold shooting night and dropped game one of the Anne Donovan Classic against Old Dominion 73-51 Thursday night at Chartway Arena.
"It was a tough outing for us today," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "Tough matchup for us with how athletic ODU was. We made a lot of mistakes on the offensive end, which led to easy transition buckets for them. An unfortunate result but hopefully we can regroup with the next two games."
The Spiders (6-5) had a tough shooting night at 30 percent from the field (18-for-60) and only hit 4-for-23 from the three-point line. Richmond also had 21 turnovers and couldn't get anything going offensively. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) finished with 12 points and three steals. Sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) added eight points and senior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) scored eight points.
Old Dominion took a 39-24 halftime lead after shooting 55.2 percent (16-for-29) from the field and hit 4-of-7 from the three-point line. Richmond had 11 turnovers and only hit 2-for-11 from downtown.
Klimkiewicz led the team with eight points and three steals. Squires added four points and Duggan scored four points off the bench.
ODU opened the game with a 15-3 run capped by a fast break layup from Ajah Wayne with 6:27 left in the first quarter. Richmond answered back by ending the first quarter with a 7-0 run to get within five points at 20-15.
The Monarchs took control again in the second quarter with a 10-2 run to build a 30-17 lead off a layup from Amari Young. The Spiders tried to cut into the lead but only scored seven points the rest of the quarter to trail by 15 at halftime.
In the third quarter, ODU scored the first eight points to not let Richmond back in the game. The Monarchs outscored the Spiders 18-15 in the third quarter. Richmond had its largest deficit in the fourth quarter going down by 27 points at 69-42 but the Spiders kept fighting.
The Spiders went on a 9-2 run to end the game and make the final score 73-51. Duggan had four points in the final two minutes.
Richmond continues the Anne Donovan Classic against Mount St. Mary's on Friday, Dec. 20, at 7:30 p.m. inside Chartway Arena.
