Richmond Drops Game Against Mount St. Mary’s

NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team made a late comeback but fell short against Mount St. Mary's 75-67 Friday night in game two of the Anne Donovan Classic at Chartway Arena.
"Hats off to Mount St. Mary's tonight," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I thought they played really well and were well coached. Unfortunately, we couldn't match their effort on the boards and hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow heading into the holiday."
The Spiders (6-6) received a season high from sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) and a career high from senior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.). Holt scored 17 points and Duggan added 14. Freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) also had a career high with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Richmond was outrebounded 47-35 by The Mount, including 14 rebounds from Jattarrikah Settle. Settle led all scorers with 23 points and dished out three assists. The Spiders finished the game shooting 40.3 percent from the field off 25-for-62 and hit just 5-of-15 from the three-point line.
In the final quarter, the Spiders made a comeback to get within three points at 54-51 with 7:06 left. Richmond fell behind 54-41 before scoring the next 10 points. Duggan and sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead. The Mount's Settle hit two huge layups to stop the run. Richmond couldn't get closer than five points the rest of the game.
Holt led the team with 11 points at halftime to keep Richmond within one point at 30-29 against Mount St. Mary's. Duggan added six points and grabbed three rebounds off the bench.
Richmond took an early 18-13 lead after the first quarter. The Spiders opened the game with a 6-2 run as Chapman made her first collegiate start. Richmond ended the quarter with a 7-2 run thanks to a late three-pointer by Holt.
In the second quarter, Mount St. Mary's scored the first six points to take a 19-18 lead. Richmond answered back with back-to-back layups from Chapman and Klimkiewicz. Holt hit another three-pointer to give the Spiders a 26-25 lead with 3:53 left in the quarter. The Mount would retake the lead outscoring Richmond 5-3 to end the quarter.
The Spiders had a tough third quarter giving up 20 points to Mount St. Mary's and fell behind by nine points to enter the fourth quarter. Richmond only scored 12 points in the third and was 0-for-4 from downtown.
Richmond finishes the Anne Donovan Classic against Hampton on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 4:30 p.m. inside Chartway Arena.
