NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team battled to the very end but fell short against Hampton, 69-65, Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Anne Donovan Classic at Chartway Arena.
"We saw a lot of good things today but we just made some tough mistakes at a few inopportune times," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I do believe we are a better team than we showed over these three days and I trust we will improve and make the necessary adjustments. Claire has consistently been working her tail off and I'm happy to see her commitment was rewarded with the All-Tournament nod."
The Spiders (6-7) have lost four-straight games after coming up short against the Pirates. Richmond shot 38.3 percent from the field (23-of-60) and 9-for-28 from the three-point line. The Spiders did outrebound Hampton 44-37 but 20 turnovers proved to be costly.
Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) finished with a career-high 20 points with four assists and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) had 12 points and senior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) added 10 points off the bench. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
Hampton's Charlisa Jenkins led the team with a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Big South reigning Player of the Year Ashley Bates scored 17 points with three assists.
In the fourth quarter, Richmond made a run to cut Hampton's lead to one point at 52-51 off a three-pointer from Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.). Bates answered for Hampton with back-to-back layups to push the lead to 56-51 with 5:49 remaining. The Spiders got within three points at 68-65 after three free throws by Holt with 14 seconds left. Hampton closed out the win with a free throw to make the final 69-65.
Hampton held a 21-15 lead with 2:37 left in the second quarter before Richmond closed on a 9-2 run to pull ahead 24-23 at the half. Hinds-Clarke had six points and two blocks to lead the team. Klimkiewicz scored six points and Duggan added four points off the bench.
The Spiders trailed 10-6 after the first quarter only shooting 2-for-12 from the field. In the second quarter, shots started to fall scoring 18 points off 8-for-18 from the field. Hampton had their largest lead at 19-10 with 6:22 on the clock in the second quarter.
Richmond was outscored 25-18 in the third quarter and is now 1-6 on the season when trailing after three. The Spiders allowed Hampton to score 40 points in the paint and convert 19 points off Richmond turnovers.
