Spiders Power Past Campbell for 15-8 Win To Open Season

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Senior Mia Castagnero scored four times and three others logged hat tricks in the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team's 15-8 season-opening win over Campbell on Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C.

The Spiders have now won four straight season-opening games, with the last two coming against the Camels.

Katie Sciandra started the scoring for the Spiders, tallying her first of three scores on the day just under four minutes into the game.

After Campbell scored twice to take their lone lead of the game, Geiersbach, Brown and Castagnero all scored to give the Spiders the lead for good. Geiersbach's goal, her first since 2017, was assisted by rookie Lauren Kingsbury.

The Spiders allowed two more tallied from the Camels through the remainder of the half while scoring four of their own to take an 8-4 lead into halftime. Castagnero finished the first half with a hat trick, while Geiersbach and Brown both logged two goals and an assist through the opening 30 minutes.

Castagnero started the second-half scoring on a goal assisted by Sciandra, before Campbell once again scored twice in a row to cut into the lead.

The Spiders went on to score the next five goals and shut out the Camels over the next 18 minutes. Sciandra, Brown and Geiersbach all completed their hat tricks, and Reagan Williams scored her first goal since 2017 on another helper from Kingsbury.

Despite two goals from Campbell in the final six minutes, Williams scored her second of the day with four seconds to play on an assist from Castagnero to wrap up the 15-8 win.

Megan Gianforte had an outstanding day in goal, logging 10 saves and holding the Camels to 3-for-7 from free position. The Spiders defense stood strong through 60 minutes of play, forcing the Camels into 24 turnovers.

The Spiders return to action on Wednesday, February 20, when they open play at Robins Stadium against ACC foe Virginia. Game time for Wednesday's home opener is set for 3 p.m.
