02/19/2019 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team picked up its second-straight victory and opened the home portion of the regular season in style Tuesday night with a convincing 17-12 victory over UMBC at Robins Stadium. The game marked the first of six-straight at home at Robins Stadium and the 10th-straight victory at home for the Spiders dating back to 2017.
Richmond continues its home stand Saturday afternoon when it hosts Atlantic Coast Conference member and sixth-ranked Notre Dame at noon at Robins Stadium. Tickets for the game at $10 for adults and $5 for youth 12 and under and can be purchased on the day of the game.
Sophomore attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) and senior attack Teddy Hatfield (Summit, N.J.) continued their dominant starts to the season, combining for 14 points in the victory. Lanchbury tied his career-high with five goals in the win, giving him 14 goals through the first three games of the year. This marks the second time this season that he has scored five goals (Maryland) and has scored at least four goals in all three games this year. His 14 goals in three games is a program-record for goals in a three-game stretch and has scored three or more goals in seven of his last nine games dating back to last year.
Hatfield posted eight points in the victory with three goals and five assists. His eight points ties a single-game program record, a record he already owns three other times with the last time coming May 4, 2017 against Furman. The five assists also ties his single-game record for helpers while his three goals moves his career total to 95, just four off the career record held by Mitch Goldberg.
Sophomore midfielder Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) added three goals and an assist while seven different Spiders found the back of the net. The Spiders' 17 goals are a season-high and the most since scoring 18 goals last year against VMI. Richmond and UMBC combined for 88 shots on the game, with the Retrievers holding a 46-42 advantage in shots.
Junior goalkeeper Blake Goodman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came on in relief of injured starter Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) early in the second half and his play helped spark the Spiders' defense. Coming in cold off the bench, Goodman recorded 14 saves in 29:50 of play, while allowing five goals. His 14 saves are the most for a Spider goalkeeper since Goodman's program-record 18 saves last year against Bucknell. Rusbuldt added seven saves before his injury as Richmond had the advantage with 21 saves, compared to just six or UMBC.
The Retrievers (0-2) started quickly, scoring the first two goals of the game and holding a 3-2 advantage less than five minutes into the game. The Spiders' responded with six-straight goals, taking a 9-3 lead early in the second quarter. Junior Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) added two goals in the second, scoring one at the end of the first quarter and another early in the second.
UMBC was able to trim the deficit back to three at 11-8 early in the second half but the Spiders had a string of five-straight goals in the second half to extend the lead to 17-9 with 11:41 remaining and end any doubt in the victory. Brett Reid (Clinton, Conn.) and Ryan Lee (South Salem, N.Y.) got into the scoring act during the second half run that allowed the Spiders to improve to 3-3 all-time against UMBC in program-history.
