Richmond Ends Home Streak In Loss Against George Mason

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team had won three-straight games at home but George Mason held off a late rally in a 67-52 victory Thursday night at the Robins Center.
The Patriots led for 35:40 out of a possible 40 minutes in their 15-point win against Richmond. Nicole Cardano-Hillary led the team with 16 points and went 7-for-12 from the free throw line. Camarie Gatling, a Richmond native, scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The starting five for George Mason scored 50 of the 67 points.
Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Freshman Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) provided a spark for Richmond with a career-high 18 points off six three-pointers, which was two shy of tying the school record. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) added 11 points with four rebounds.
Richmond falls to 7-19 overall and is 4-9 in Atlantic 10 play with three games remaining in the regular season. George Mason improves to 14-12 and 6-7 in A-10 action.
George Mason took a 33-24 lead after two quarters thanks to 10 points from Camarie Gatling. Holt gave the Spiders a spark off the bench hitting a three-pointer from the corner in the first quarter. Holt drained her second three-pointer to tie the game at 6-6 with 6:14 remaining in the first.
Holt gave Richmond a 11-8 lead after another three-pointer at the 4:03 mark. George Mason ended the quarter on a 6-2 run to go ahead 14-13.
In the second quarter, Holt her fourth three-pointer of the game to cut the Patriots' lead to one at 17-16. George Mason built a 24-17 lead capped off by a layup from Allie McCool.
Parson grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to get Richmond within 24-21 with 4:58 left in the quarter. The Patriots' ended the quarter on a 10-3 run, including a layup by Cardano-Hillary at the buzzer.
George Mason outscored the Spiders 19-15 in the third quarter to move ahead 52-39. Cardano-Hillary had eight points and went 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the third quarter. The Spiders struggled from the field going 6-for-18 in the third.
Richmond showed some fight late in the fourth quarter as Hinds-Clarke made back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to 58-49 with 4:01 on the clock. The Spiders got even closer when Holt hit a three-pointer to make it an eight-point game at 60-52 with 3:29 left.
The Patriots' with the shot clock running out hit a deep three-pointer by Sarah Kaminski to ice the game. George Mason would score the next seven points to close out the win at 67-52. George Mason scored 32 points in the paint and held Richmond to just 14 points in the paint.
The Spiders remain home to face La Salle on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. inside the Robins Center.
