Spiders Hold Off La Salle On Senior Day, 56-51

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team hit a bunch of clutch free throws in the closing seconds to hold off La Salle, 56-51, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day. The game also featured the 100-year celebration where former players came back to be honored.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J) posted her 10th double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Freshman Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) added 12 points and dished out five assists. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) scored 12 points.
Graduate student Daija Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) was honored pre-game on Senior Day and finished with nine points with eight rebounds.
Richmond improves to 8-19 overall and is 5-9 in Atlantic 10 conference play with two games remaining. The Spiders will need to win both games to finish in the top eight. The Explorers fall to 4-24 and are just 1-13 in A-10 games.
Both teams nearly shot identical from the field with Richmond shooting 31.7 percent (19-for-60) and La Salle shot 31.1 (19-for-61). The game came down to free throws with Holt going 4-for-4 from the line in the last 20 seconds.
La Salle had cut the lead to 52-49 with 32 seconds remaining but Holt calmly sank two free throws and hit two more with 14 seconds on the clock. Hinds-Clarke secured her 15th rebound to end the game.
Richmond jumped out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter against La Salle. The Spiders increased their lead to 34-19 after two quarters. Hinds-Clarke led the way with 10 points and eight rebounds in the first two quarters. Parson added nine points and hit two three-pointers.
Ruffin scored five points and grabbed six rebounds at the half.
Richmond went on a 9-0 run in the first quarter capped by a Parson three-pointer with 6:47 on the clock. The Spiders advantage went to 11 points after a layup by freshman Imani Mustaf (Washington, D.C.) to make the score 18-7. Holt ended the first quarter with a jumper at the buzzer.
In the second quarter, La Salle cut the lead to 20-15 after opening the quarter with a 6-0 run. Hinds-Clarke and Ruffin made back-to-back buckets to push the lead back to 24-15.
Richmond outscored the Explorers 10-4 to end the quarter and take a 15-point halftime lead. In the third quarter, La Salle started to chip away holding Richmond to just 11 points and cut the lead to 10 at 45-35.
La Salle's Shayla Sweeney scored seven points in the third quarter off two three-pointers. In the final quarter, Richmond had to take an early timeout after La Salle scored the first five points to get within five at 45-40.
The Spiders responded with a three-pointer by Holt and Ruffin hit one of two from the free throw line to go back up 48-40. Richmond would hold off the late rally by the Explorers to pick up their seventh win at home this season.
The Spiders head out on the road for the final time in the regular season at UMass on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m.
