Men’s Lacrosse Comeback Falls Short At No. 3 Maryland In Season Opener
02/09/2019 | Men's Lacrosse
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, but the Spiders' comeback attempt ran out of time as Richmond dropped a hard fought 10-9 contest to No. 3 Maryland Saturday afternoon at Maryland Stadium in the 2019 season opener.
Sophomore attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) sparked the comeback with a career-high five goals in the game, including the Spiders' last four goals in the comeback. Lanchbury scored four-straight goals in a nine-minute span of the fourth quarter. The five goals are the second-most in a single game in Spider history, the most since teammate Teddy Hatfield (Summit, N.J.) had five against Mount St. Mary's last season.
Maryland, an NCAA Final Four team last year, improved to 2-0 on the season after opening the year last weekend with a win over Bucknell. The Terrapins scored the game's first two goals in the opening three minutes against redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.), making his first career start.
Hatfield scored the Spiders' first goal of the season, notching his 87th career goal at the 9:54 mark. After the Terrapins added a third goal, Hatfield scored his second goal to make it a 3-2 contest. Junior Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) scored his first of the season in the second quarter to make it a 5-3 contest.
Maryland scored the next four goals, including three-straight to close out the first half taking a 9-4 lead. Jared Bernhardt scored five of the Terrapins' first nine goals to lead the attack for Maryland. Lanchbury scored his first goal of the game in third quarter as the Spiders went into the final 15 minutes trailing 10-4.
Sophomore Tate Gallagher (Ardmore, Pa.) started the Spiders' fourth quarter comeback with his first of the season in the 12:01 mark. Lanchbury added his second just 26 seconds later off a feed from Hatfield to give the rally some steam. He added his third with a man-up at the 7:17 mark and made it a 10-8 game with 4:50 remaining off the third assist of the game by Shoults.
Lanchbury made it a 10-9 game with 2:01 remaining, scoring his second man-up goal of the game off a Hatfield assist. The Spiders were unable to gain possession in the final two minutes as Maryland was able to kill off the clock and preserve the victory, stalling the Spiders'' comeback.
Shoults finished the game with four points, scoring a goal and handing out three assists while Hatfield added two goals and two assists. Rusbuldt made 11 saves in his first career start while Richmond was out-shot by a 47-35 margin. The Terrapins controlled play in the faceoff circle, owning a 20-3 advantage against the Spiders.
Richmond continues its two-game road swing to open the season next weekend when it travels to Bucknell for a meeting against the Bison.
