02/16/2019 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team scored the last three goals of the game to rally for a 13-11 victory at Bucknell Saturday afternoon. The back-and-forth affair saw the teams trade goals throughout the game that saw 10 ties scores until the Spiders had their game-ending goal-scoring binge over the final 8:38 of the game.
The Spiders open the home portion of the season Tuesday afternoon when they host UMBC at Robins Stadium in the first of six-straight home games. Game time Tuesday is set for 4 p.m. and admission is free.
Sophomore attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) and senior attack Teddy Hatfield (Summit, N.J.) led the way offensively with four goals apiece, with Hatfield finishing with six total points.
Lanchbury continued his torrid start to the season, scoring four goals after notching a career-high five goals in the season opener against No. 3 Maryland. His nine goals in two games are the second-most by a Spider in program history in consecutive games, just behind Mitch Goldberg's 10 goals in two games in 2015 (five vs. North Carolina & five vs. Jacksonville). He finished the game scoring the final two goals after closing the Maryland game with the last four goals of the game.
Hatfield finished with four goals and two assists in the victory. His four goals raised his career number to 91, just eight goals shy of Goldberg's career program record. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) picked up his first career win in his second career start, making nine saves. Sophomore defender Jason Reynolds (Chester Springs, Pa.) led the charge on defense with five ground balls and two forced turnovers.
After Bucknell opened the scoring just 1:14 into the game, the Spiders responded with three-straight goals in a span of 4:42 to take an early 3-1 lead. Lanchbury kept his hot streak going by tying the game, scoring his sixth of the season and fifth-straight for the Spiders on the season.
Junior Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) added his second goal of the year to give Richmond the lead and Lanchbury added his second of the game for the 3-1 lead. Bucknell responded back with two goals to close out the first tied at 3-3. Richmond and Bucknell traded goals early in the second as Tate Gallagher (Ardmore, Pa.) scored his second of the year. Hatfield tallied his 88th career goal late in the first half to send the Spiders into the locker room with a 5-4 lead.
The teams traded goals early in the third until Bucknell scored three-straight to take an 8-6 lead with 4:22 remaining. The Spiders' killed off an man-advantage after the Bison goal and sophomore Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) added his first of the season in the closing seconds of the third to make it a one-goal game.
Hatfield scored two goals early in the fourth surrounding a Bucknell goal to tie the game at 9-9 with 12:30 remaining. The goals secured Hatfield's first hat trick of the season. Bucknell retook the lead before Ryan Lee (South Salem, N.Y.) recorded his first of the season and the Spiders' first goal a man-up of the game, tying the contest at 10-10. The Bison took their final lead of the game at 11-10 when Matthew Barkauskas scored his third of the game with 10:21 remaining.
Hatfield tied the game for the 10th time by scoring his fourth goal of the game with 8:38 remaining off a feed from Lanchbury. Lanchbury took over the scoring from there, finding the back of the net with 6:27 remaining with an unassisted tally for the 12-11 lead and securing the win with an insurance goal with 3:44 remaining off an assist from Gallagher.
