
Brown, Sciandra Lead Spiders To Win Over Duquesne In Offensive Battle

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team found an answer for each Duquesne goal and used a seven-goal run in the second half to secure an 18-14 Atlantic 10 win on Friday morning at Robins Stadium.

Marissa Brown led the way for the offense with her second eight-point performance in a row on three goals and five assists, while Katie Sciandra tallied a game-high five goals for the second-straight game, including her 100th as a Spider at the 23:01 mark in the first half. Eight different Spiders scored in the win.

Madison Ostrick started the scoring for the Spiders, before Brown made it 2-0 just over two minutes in. The Dukes responded with two goals of their own, but the Spiders rebounded with a four-goal outburst to make it 6-2 with 19:29 to play in the half. Sciandra, Sam Geiersbach, Brown and Mia Castagnero all scored in the run.

The two teams traded goals over the next 11 minutes, as Aly Fries, Ostrick and Sciandra all scored to push the Spider lead to 9-5 with under nine minutes on the clock. Duquesne went on to score the next three goals, but Sciandra's third goal of the half with 40 seconds to play made it a 10-8 Spider lead at the break.

The Dukes came out in the second half with the momentum, scoring the opening three goals to take an 11-10 lead with 25 minutes to play. Following a Spider timeout, Richmond went on a dominant 7-0 run over the next 18 minutes to go up 17-11. Castagnero, Sciandra, Geiersbach, Brown, Ostrick, Becca Curro and Lauren Kingsbury all scored during the run.

Duquesne looked to be out of the game, but managed to score three times in just over three minutes to cut the lead to three. The Spider defense held on and Sciandra scored her fifth goal to finish the game.

Megan Gianforte finished with 12 saves in net for the Spiders, as well as three ground balls and a caused turnover. Julie Ball led the way on defense with four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Maddie Finnen won five draws. Eight different Spiders logged a caused turnover in the game.

Richmond returns to action on Sunday, March 31, when they travel to face George Washington in the first of three-straight road games. Game time in Washington, D.C., is set for 1 p.m.
