Spiders Dominate Draw In Win At George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-6 lead at halftime and didn't look back on its way to a 15-10 win at George Washington on Sunday afternoon.

Marissa Brown and Sam Geiersbach led the Spider offense with three goals and two assists apiece, while Madison Ostrick tallied a game-high four goals, all in the second half. Katie Sciandra finished the day with four points on a pair of goals and assists.

Sciandra started the scoring with an unassisted goal in the third minute, before the Colonials scored twice to take their only lead of the game. Mia Castagnero and Brown regained the lead with their first goals of the day, but George Washington tied things up at 4-4 with just under 16 minutes to play in the half.

The Colonial goal was a spark for the Spiders, who went on a five-goal run over the next eight minutes to take a 9-4 advantage. Brown, Lauren Kingsbury, Geiersbach, Sciandra and Castagnero all scored in the run, with Sciandra logging two assists and Brown, Geiersbach and Becca Curro all posting one helper.

George Washington scored the final two goals of the half to send the Spiders into the locker room with a three-goal lead.

Madison Ostrick scored her first of four goals off an assist from Aly Fries with 27 minutes to play before making it an 11-6 lead with a free position goal at the 24:50 mark. After the Colonials scored to cut into the lead, Ostrick finished the hat trick, assisted by Geiersbach.

Geiersbach scored her second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Brown to make it a six-goal game, and the Colonials got a goal back before Ostrick tallied her fourth and final goal of the day. The hosts then scored a pair of goals, but Geiersbach managed to finish her hat trick with a minute and a half to play and send the Spiders home with the five-goal win.

Julie Ball had a monster day both at the draw and on defense, winning a career-high 10 draws and collecting six ground balls. Ostrick and Maddie Finnen also finished with four draws each, leading the Spiders to a 20-8 advantage in the circle.

The Spiders will stay on the road for a quick trip down to VCU on Friday, April 5. Game time at Cary Street Field is set for 5 p.m.
