Spiders Shatter Records In 21-11 Senior Day Win Over Saint Joseph’s

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Seven different Spiders posted multi-goal games as the Richmond offense tallied a program-high 36 points in a pivotal 21-11 Senior Day win over Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
Prior to the game, the Spiders honored seniors Julie Ball, Marissa Brown, Mia Castagnero, Aly Fries, Danni LeServe, Maria McDonough, Tatiana Monds and Katie Sciandra, who have posted 53 wins to be the winningest class in program history.
Sam Geiersbach led the way with a career-high nine points on three goals and six assists, also a career high. Brown logged a pair of goals and five assists, while Castagnero scored five times and Reagan Williams added a career-high four goals. The Spiders finished the day with a program-record 15 assists to go along with their 21 goals.
Saint Joseph's started the scoring in the seventh minute in an early defensive battle, but the Spiders rattled off six-straight goals, five of which were assisted, to take a 6-1 lead with 16:23 to play in the half. Williams, Madison Ostrick, Sciandra and Geiersbach each scored once in the run, while Castagnero netted two goals.
A goal by the Hawks stopped the Spider run, but Sciandra scored twice more and Williams scored her second to extend the lead. Saint Joseph's scored three more goals in the final nine minutes of the half, but Geiersbach and Castagnero also scored give Richmond the 11-5 lead at the break.
Following a short rain delay that extended halftime, Brown and Williams put the Spiders up 13-5 on early second-half goals. The Hawks scored five of the next seven goals, but scores from Fries and Ostrick just 40 seconds apart kept the visitors at arm's length.
The Spiders finished the game with a 6-1 outburst in the final 12:36, as five different players scored for the ten-goal victory.
Led by Tatiana Monds, the Richmond defense held the A-10's leading point scorer Francesca Donato to just two points on the day while also forcing the Hawks into 20 turnovers. Monds led the way with four caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Megan Gianforte and Danni LeServe shared time in net, totaling four saves. Julie Ball led the Spiders to an 18-16 advantage at the draw with nine on the day.
The Spiders will now wait to see who they will face in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament as the unofficial No. 3 seed. VCU, La Salle, George Washington and Duquesne are all knotted at 3-5 in conference play and vying for the final two spots in the tournament.
The 2019 Atlantic 10 Tournament, hosted by George Mason, begins on Thursday, April 25, and concludes with the championship game on Sunday, April 28.
