RVA Belongs to the Spiders as Baseball Takes Series from VCU
04/21/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond baseball earned its second walk-off victory of the weekend Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field to take the series from the cross-town rival VCU Rams. The Spiders scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning on a bases loaded infield single from freshman Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas). Richmond earns its 20th win of the season as it improves to 20-16-1, and 7-5 in Atlantic 10 play. VCU, currently sitting atop the A-10 standings, falls to 28-12 on the season, and 11-4 in conference play.
Senior catcher Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) played the role of hero for the second-straight Spider victory as he scored the game-winning run in the 11th. Schmidt finished the day 2-for-5 at the plate, caught a runner stealing while catching all 11 innings. Ready finished with a season-high three hits, with the game winner and an RBI. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) and D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) each added multi-hit performances in the win.
Redshirt senior captain Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas) started on the mound, going 5.1 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out five Rams. The bullpen returned to form as the trio of Brian Craven (Hingham, Mass.), Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) and Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) combined to shutout the Rams over the next six innings. Craven worked 2.1 innings allowing just one hit and striking out two. DeLarso went 2.0 innings with a strikeout. Looney earned the win, throwing the final 1.1 innings with a strikeout.
Richmond used the long ball to jump ahead in the bottom of the first inning. Bruhl drove a two-strike offering to center field to put a runner on for Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) who turned on a pitch and sent it beyond the outfield wall to put the Spiders up 2-0.
VCU tied the game in the top of the third inning, getting a two-run home run from Brett Norwood. The Rams went ahead in the top of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs on a couple singles from Paul Witt and Liam Hibbits.
The Spiders answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring a pair of runs. Lee led the frame off with a single to center before coming around to score from first after a double to left center from freshman Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.). Hipsman came around to score on a Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) single through the left side. Hipsman wheeled around from second and his head first slide at home went around the tag to tie the game up at four.
Both bullpens pitched tough over the next six innings, as just one more run scored in the contest. It took until the 11th inning before the Spiders won the contest. Schmidt led off the frame with a single the opposite way before Lee reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt moved runners into scoring position, VCU elected to walk Hipsman to pitch to Ready. Ready tapped a single back to the pitcher, and after a miscommunication between the pitcher and the catcher, Schmidt slid in in front of the pitcher to score the game-winning run and give the Spiders the series.
Richmond returns to Pitt Field this Wednesday as it hosts William and Mary at 3 p.m.
