Spiders Fall At Rhode Island In Extra Innings

KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Richmond baseball team fell short in a 4-3 loss on the road at Rhode Island in extra innings Saturday afternoon. Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) had three hits and drove in two RBI in the loss.
The Spiders (16-11-1, 3-2 A-10) held a 3-0 lead after eight innings before the Rams scored three runs in the ninth to tie the game. Rhode Island scored the game-winning run off an error in the 10th inning to improve to 13-14 and 6-2 in the Atlantic 10.
Sophomore Kent Morrison (Herndon, Va.) threw four scoreless innings, only allowing two hits and struck out two. In the fourth inning, Richmond struck first scoring two runs. Schmidt came through with a two-run single to put the Spiders on the board.
Rhode Island threaten in the fifth inning loading the bases before relief pitch Jacob Lamb (Salisbury, Conn.) induced a fly out to end the inning.
Richmond added an insurance run in the seventh inning off an RBI single from Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.).
Senior Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) came on in the ninth looking for his sixth save but Rhode Island rallied. With two outs, the Rams worked the bases loaded thanks to two walks. Looney allowed the tying runs to score off back-to-back singles but ended the inning with a strikeout.
In the 10th inning, Rhode Island won the game off a throwing error to earn a walk-off win for the second game in a row. Matt Olson (Mableton, Ga.) took the tough luck loss falling to 1-1 on the season.
Richmond will look to take the rubber match on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for Noon at Rhode Island with right-hander Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas) getting the start for the Spiders.
