Baseball Eliminated from the A-10 Tournament with 6-3 Loss to Davidson
05/24/2019 | Baseball
THE BRONX, N.Y. – Richmond baseball fell 6-3 to the Davidson Wildcats in the consolation bracket of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Friday evening at Houlihan Park. The Spiders went up early, but the Wildcats used a pair of home runs to take the lead and eventually the game, eliminating the Spiders from the tournament. Richmond finishes the 2019 season 28-25-1.
Freshman Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) got the start on the mound. He tossed 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and struck out five. Jacob Lamb (Salisbury, Conn.) came on in the sixth and suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs on five hits. Matt Olson (Mableton, Ga.) made an appearance, allowing a couple hits before giving way to freshman Brian Craven (Hingham, Mass.) Craven worked 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and a strikeout. Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) closed the game out, throwing 1.1 innings, striking out three of the four hitters he faced.
The Spider offense was held to five hits in the contest. Freshman Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) paced the squad with a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and his eighth double of the season. Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) added a two-RBI single, Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) a single, and D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) finished his 183rd career start 1-for-2 with a walk.
Richmond scored first in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Spiders were advantageous as back-to-back walks started the frame. Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) played some small ball as he dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. After a strikeout, Cook drove a single to left field to bring in two and put the Spiders up 2-0.
Davidson responded in the next half inning, getting a run back. A lead-off double from Eric Jones started the rally and a couple ground outs to the right side moved him over and brought him in to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Wildcats used the long ball to go up in the top of the seventh, plating five runs. The inning started with back-to-back singles before Ruben Fontes hit his Atlantic 10 Conference-leading 14th home run. Brett Centracchio followed with a home run of his own to extend the lead to 5-2. The home runs were the first surrendered by Lamb in the last two seasons. Three more singles followed to bring in the fifth run of the inning and extend the Wildcat lead to 6-2.
Richmond rallied in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases. Hipsman started the inning with a single to right and moved around after Cook was hit by a pitch and Lee drew a walk. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) cut the lead down to three with an RBI ground out, but the Spiders couldn't complete the comeback attempt, falling 6-3.
