McGuigan Throws a Gem to Eliminate Top Seeded VCU
05/24/2019 | Baseball
THE BRONX, N.Y. – Richmond baseball eliminated cross-town rival and the top seeded VCU Rams by a 6-2 score at Houlihan Park Thursday night in the consolation round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Redshirt senior captain Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas) tossed a 7.0 inning gem to earn the win, allowing just one hit. The Spiders improve to 28-24-1 and advance to play the Davidson Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. VCU is eliminated from the tournament and ends their regular season with a 39-19 mark.
McGuigan turned in a gutsy performance on the mound, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing just one hit, two earned runs and struck out eight Ram hitters. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) threw the final 2.0 innings, striking out a pair without allowing a hit.
The Richmond offense went for seven hits in the contest. All the hits came from different players as Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.), Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.), Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.), Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) and D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) all earned hits. Bruhl and Forte doubled and Hipsman hit his third home run of the season to help give the Spiders the victory and send the Rams home early.
Richmond got out to an early lead, playing a couple runs in the third inning. Lee led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Schulefand drove a single to centerfield where the throw to the infield was mishandled, allowing Lee to score and Schulefand to move into scoring position. Plantier drove in Schulefand with a single to center and the Spiders had a 2-0 lead.
The Spiders added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Bruhl led off after getting hit by a pitch. Plantier drove another ball to center field where it was misplayed and Bruhl went first to third. Forte drove a fly ball to centerfield where it was caught, but it was deep enough to drive in Bruhl. After a Schmidt single, Hipsman added the biggest hit of the game. He drove a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right field to bring in all three runs and extend the lead to 6-0.
VCU answered the next half inning. After a walk put a runner on, VCU got its first hit of the game from Logan Amiss, an RBI triple to center field. The Brandon Henson followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to cut the lead down to 6-2.
The Rams threatened with a couple runners in the top of the eighth, but DeLarso worked out of the jam, getting a pop up to Bruhl in shallow right.
The Spiders return to the field tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 and will face the Davidson Wildcats in another elimination game.
