By Dionte Austin,
A potential NFL prospect and All-American defensive end, Maurice Jackson continues to impress us on the field and now he has astonished us beyond the walls of football. Working under Ashley Yencho, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing, Jackson's work during his internship centers around sports marketing. He is hopeful that by the end of his internship he will discover if his future career will continue in the field of sports marketing.
Jackson chose this internship because if his plans to go to the NFL do not come to pass, he wishes to stay as close as he can to sports, especially football. With a sports marketing title, a great emphasis is put on the use of social media. Throughout the day, Jackson tracks the University of Richmond social media site to see what's trending. He primarily looks at other basketball and football sites to see what may be trending there as well. Jackson pays close attention to what other college teams are doing to market themselves and how. He compares other universities athletic pages and demonstrates the similarities and differences linked to Richmond athletics.
As an end result, he attempts to help improve Richmond athletics by seeking better marketing tactics than the previous years. Jackson is loving the work he is doing and what he is learning from it, especially since it relates closely to his sociology degree. From what Jackson has learned from his studies, he can freely speak about how the science of social groups relate to what he is doing. He uses both his knowledge in the classroom and in the office to analyze social media content within today's society in order to create ideas for marketing tactics that can help promote maximum exposure for Richmond athletic teams.
Jackson furthermore maintains a secondary job on campus that involves reaching out to residents to promote attendance at Richmond football games. Most recently, Jackson secured a customer who paid just under a $1,000 on season tickets. Not only this, but his work also aided in a huge leap in ticket sales for the Richmond men's basketball team. His primary source for this success involved the use of social media in creating ideas to post and talk closely with fans. Up to this point, Jackson has learned from his internship that culture changes constantly; especially due to the use of technology.
Understanding specific social media tactics and being open to society's evolvement can help spread ideas across the globe in a matter of seconds. Implementing this along with the rest of Jackson's work will continue to help build Richmond's athletic programs in more ways than one. And, being an athlete himself, he simultaneously balances his work in the office while additionally trying to better himself on the field. Jackson looks at specific techniques that he can implement on the field. Although he loves football immensely, he focuses on all sports as his job incorporates a variety of games.
