Football Preseason Camp – Day One
07/31/2019 | Football
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team opened up fall preseason camp Wednesday afternoon on the brand new turf at Robins Stadium. The practice was the first of 21 preseason camp practices prior to the first day of classes for Richmond. All Richmond football practices are open to the public.
Richmond returns 13 starters from last season's team, including eight on the defensive side. Leading the way for the Spiders is preseason Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.). Jackson ranked eighth in the nation in sacks per game last year at 1.0 and led the CAA in sacks, tackles for loss and forced fumbles, despite only playing 10 games.
Senior safety Daniel Jones (Williamsburg, Va.) earned preseason honorable mention All-CAA honors. Jones has posted 154 tackles and seven interceptions as a starter the past two seasons. Additionally, Richmond returns three out of its four starters on the defensive line and all four of its starters in the secondary. Junior defensive lineman Colby Ritten (Orlando, Fla.) has played and started in every game of his career for the Spiders.
Offensively, junior running back Xavier Goodall (Richmond, Va.) returns after missing last season due to an injury sustained in fall camp in 2018. Goodall was the Spiders' top rusher in 2017 and ran for 180 and two touchdowns in his last game of 2017. Joining him in the back field are a pair of redshirt freshmen running backs who got experience last year under the new NCAA transfer rule in Aaron Dykes (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Milan Howard (Charlotte, N.C.).
The Spiders enter camp with competition at both the quarterback and wide receiver positions. Four signal callers will have an opportunity in camp to compete for the starting job. Redshirt juniors Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) and Reid Chenault (Goochland, Va.) each started games last year while Air Force transfer Beau English (Stevenson, Md.) and freshman Jackson Walker (Memphis, Tenn.) enter the mix this fall vying for playing time.
Richmond will have to replace its top seven receiving targets from last year but are deep at the position with talent up and down the board. A pair of graduate transfers in Charlie Fessler (Erie, Pa.) from Northwestern and Keyston Fuller (Griffin, Ga.) from Duke lead the way. Joining them in the battle are Ben Maffe (Ashburn, Va.) and Jeremiah Brown (High Point, N.C.) while redshirt freshmen Justin Jasper (Mechanicsville, Va.) and Isaac Brown (Winchester, Va.) each got experience under the redshirt rule last season.
