Assistant Coach Nate Mulberg Named Assistant for Team Israel
08/16/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Assistant baseball coach Nate Mulberg was named an assistant coach for the Israel Association of Baseball's national team in the early rounds of Olympic qualifying in Europe. Mulberg, the Spiders' infield/catching instructor and recruiting coordinator, will join up with former Spider Jonathan De Marte as part of Team Israel in September as the two will be competing for a spot to represent Israel in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
"I am honored to be an assistant coach for Team Israel as we look to secure a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics." Mulberg said, "Having a chance to be part of an Olympic qualifying baseball team while representing Spider Baseball, Richmond Athletics, and the University of Richmond as a whole is a tremendous achievement that means a lot to me. I am so thankful to Team Israel head coach Eric Holtz for giving me this opportunity, and coach Woodson and the Richmond Athletic Administration for allowing me to pursue this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
"This is a great opportunity for Nate." Head coach Tracy Woodson said, "Coach Mulberg has been a true asset to our program and I know he will be just that for Team Israel. This is something that truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for him. The experience he will gain as part of the top International competition will be instrumental in the continuing improvement of him as a coach, and for Spider baseball."
Team Israel will be one of 12 teams competing in Bonn, Germany for an opportunity to move on to the next round of qualifying in Italy. Israel qualified to play in Germany after winning the B Pool of the Confederation of European Baseball's European Championships in July. Mulberg will be assisting the team in various ways, including position-player skill development, in-game coaching/game management and other administrative duties.
In this upcoming round, Team Israel must finish in the top five with play beginning September 7th. Team Israel will face teams from the Czech Republic, Belgium, Austria, Great Britain and the Netherlands, with 12 teams competing in the event. The top five of these 12 teams will move on to the Olympic Games qualifiers for Europe and Africa that will take place in Parma, Italy September 18-22.
The first round of competition saw Team Israel dominate the field, winning all eight games in the first round and the playoff competition in Bulgaria. Team Israel finished in second place two seasons ago in the B Pool, and the squad was improved this season with the addition of 14 professional American Baseball players who made Aliyah to assist Team Israel in their Olympic bid. Included in these 14 players was Spider alum, de Marte.
With Richmond, de Marte was an Atlantic 10 All-Academic honoree as he served as a team captain during his final season and led the team with five home runs. He was also a leader on the mound, leading the team with a 2.67 ERA in 17 relief appearances in his final season. During his career, he made 25 total appearances and six starts on the mound. He pitched in 52.2 innings and struck out 54 hitters. As a hitter, de Marte finished with a .298 career average with 15 doubles, five home runs and 51 RBI.
"This experience will be extra special because I'll get the chance to work with Jon de Marte, who I coached during my first year here at Richmond." Mulberg said, "Jon and I have remained close since then and I can't wait to get back on the field with him."
