HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team scored five goals for the first time since 2014 and earned another shutout in a 5-0 road win at Hampton Wednesday night at the HU Soccer Complex.
"Great result for our girls in a very hostile environment," head coach Marty Beall said. "I'm proud of how we rose above the field conditions, scored some excellent goals and worked tirelessly for the shutout."
In a very physical game that saw 17 combined fouls, including 10 from Hampton, the Spiders were able to breakthrough offensively.
Richmond finished with five goals, including three in the second half. The last time the Spiders scored five goals was a 5-0 win against St. Bonaventure on Oct. 5, 2014.
Redshirt senior Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald, Ga.) and redshirt freshman Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) combined to earn the shutout for Richmond.
The Spiders (3-2-1) struck first as freshman Emma Kennedy (Blacksburg, Va.) fired a shot on net and sophomore Mollly Morgan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) cleaned up the rebound for her first goal of the season.
Richmond made it 2-0 after junior Olivia Melnyk (Basking Ridge, N.J.) raced down the sideline and found junior Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) who scored her second goal of the season with 14 minutes left in the first half.
Richmond controlled the first half outshooting Hampton, 8-3, and had multiple chances to increase their lead.
In the second half, freshman Molly Wierman (Sea Girt, N.J.) scored in the 60th minute after a nice assist by redshirt junior Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio). Richmond made it 4-0 after junior TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) found Walker who passed to Tritt for her second goal of the game.
Freshman Nora Santelli (Shaker Heights, Ohio) scored her first collegiate goal after a setup from Maya Wright (Nashville, Tenn.).
Richmond led 16-5 in total shots and was able to keep Hampton off the scoreboard earning a second-straight shutout. Tritt scored two goals and Walker added two assists in the victory.
The Spiders continue their road trip by heading to Conway, South Carolina to face Coastal Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m.
