RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Spiders combined for a 12-under par score of 276 in the second round of the VCU Invitational at the Country Club of Virginia on Monday afternoon, tying the second-lowest 18-hole score in program history. Richmond used scores of 67 (-5) from freshman Lou Baker, 68 (-4) from freshman Ben Cooper, 70 (-2) from junior Andrew McInerney, and 71 (-1) from sophomore Michael Childress in the second round. The Spiders team score of 276 (-12) matched a round played Skybrook Golf Club in Charlotte, N.C. during the 2003-04 season for the second-best in team annals and was three shots behind the best team round in program history, a 273 (-15) in the first round of the 2017 A-10 Championship at Grand Cypress in Orlando, Fla.
In Monday morning's first round, Richmond registered a score of 291 (+3). The Spiders are in seventh place at nine-under par (567) in the strong 12-team field entering Tuesday's third and final round.
"We got into a much better rhythm in round two," said coach Adam Decker. "Our guys understand that patience is key and it's a long day of golf. Sometimes you can press and try to force a result, but the team did a good job of just finding its groove this afternoon."
Richmond's 276 (-12) in round two was bettered by just one team in the field: Loyola-Maryland (273). On the individual leaderboard, Cooper is tied for sixth at six-under par (138), tied for the ninth-best 36-hole score ever by a Spider. Baker is tied for 11th at 140 (-4). His 67 on Monday afternoon was tied for the tenth-lowest single-round score in team history.
Sophomore Michael Childress is one shot behind Baker at 141 (-3) after rounds of 70 and 71 Monday. He is tied for 20th in the field of 75.
The event's final round will begin Tuesday at 8:45 AM with a shotgun start on the Country Club of Virginia's Tuckahoe Creek Course.
