RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Spiders men's golf team opened its 2019-20 campaign with a seventh-place finish at the VCU Invitational at the Country Club of Virginia. The Spiders combined for a team score of 291 (+3) in Tuesday's final round to finish the 54-hole event at 858 (-6), Richmond's lowest tournament score since shooting 24-under par en route to winning the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship.
"We know that we have the ability to shoot low," said coach Adam Decker. "This is a really competitive group and we'll use this to push ourselves even harder in practice."
In his college debut, freshman Lou Baker led the Spiders with a score of 211 (-5), tied for 11th in the 75-person field. Baker's score was tied for the 13th-lowest tournament score by an individual in program history.
Baker was joined in the top 20 by fellow freshman Ben Cooper, who finished tied for 19th at 213 (-3). Sophomore Michael Childress also finished in red numbers. His total of 215 (-1) was good for 28th place on the Tuckahoe Creek course.
After opening with a 78 in the first round, junior Andrew McInerney played rounds two and three in a combined three-under par and finished the event tied for 41st at 219 (+3), the lowest tournament score of his Spiders career.
The Spiders posted a team score of 291 (+3) in the third round after shooting 276 (-12) in the second round on Monday afternoon, tied for the second-best 18-hole team score in program history.
Richmond will return to the course in less than a week when the Spiders compete in the River Run Classic in Davidson, N.C. on September 23rd and 24th. "We don't have a lot of time before we head to Davidson," said Decker. "But we're going to stress putting and our wedge shots in the time we do have between now and then."
