Two First-Half Goals Lift Spiders Against American, 3-0
09/08/2019 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team scored two minutes into the game and never looked back in a 3-0 shutout win against American Sunday afternoon at River Road.
"I thought our team played fantastic from beginning to end," head coach Marty Beall said. "American is a very good team and I love the way they play which is why I am so proud of this win. We did a great job getting a team shout out and it is a great reward for the hard work in training."
It is the first shutout win since a 1-0 win against Fordham on Oct. 8, 2017. Redshirt senior Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald, Ga.) made two saves to earn her first shutout of the season.
Richmond (2-2-1) come out attacking early as redshirt junior Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) made a run and crossed a ball into the box where junior Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored off a header. The Spiders took a 1-0 lead in the second minute giving Tritt her first goal of the season.
In the 25th minute, freshman Jessie Prillaman (Magnolia, Del.) flicked a ball to Walker who beat the American keeper through the legs to make it 2-0 Richmond. Walker leads the team with three goals.
In the second half, the Spiders added a third goal as Tritt found junior Olivia Melnyk (Basking Ridge, N.J.) off a cross inside the box. It was Melnyk's first goal of the season and first goal as a Spider.
The Richmond defense was stellar holding American to just four shots in the game. The Spiders outshot the Eagles 11-4, including seven on goal.
Starting defenders redshirt freshman Evyn Magenbauer (Salem, Va.), freshman Gianna Lucchesi (Hamilton, N.J.) and junior Lauren Hansen (St. Paul, Minn.) helped preserve the shutout.
The Spiders head out on the road on Wednesday, Sept. 11, against Hampton at 4 p.m.
