01/17/2020 | Women's Swimming & Diving
RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond swimming and diving is back on the road this week as they head to The Bronx for a matchup with a pair of Atlantic 10 opponents. The Spiders will take on the La Salle Explorers, as well as the host Fordham Rams at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center with start time slated for 1 p.m. Fans can watch the meet on ESPN+, with a link available on the Richmond Spiders Swim and Dive schedule page on RichmondSpiders.com.
Richmond's Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) has won three A-10 Performer of the Week awards, including winning earlier this week after competing against James Madison last Saturday. The sophomore won two events and finished third in the other individual event she competed in. This is the sixth weekly award for Purcell, who won the A-10 Rookie of the Week award three times last season.
Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) is another key swimmer for the Spiders. She qualified for the NCAA meet in Austin, Texas last year and competed in the 100 and 200 backstroke at the national meet. Gouger earned Richmond's school record in the 200-backstroke a season ago.
Senior Sydney Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y.) has some of the top scores of the divers. Weiskopf has the Spiders top scores in both the 1-meter event and the 3-meter vent this season.
Against A-10 opponents this season, the Spiders are 2-1, defeating the reigning A-10 Champion, Duquesne, in the first meet of the season. The Spiders also knocked off Davidson on opening weekend, and fell at George Washington on December 7th.
