Spiders Edge La Salle on Education Day
01/23/2020 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team made a defensive stop with less than five seconds remaining to hold off La Salle, 63-61, Thursday in front of 1,926 elementary school kids on Education Day at the Robins Center.
"For us to make that comeback in the second quarter and to score 25 points with the crowd being a big part of that," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I thought we were able to defend the three-point line much better after the first quarter only allowing two the rest of the way. I thought our players found a way to get it done at the end."
With four seconds left, La Salle found Claire Jacobs under the basket but missed the layup as sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) grabbed the rebound with one second on the clock. Klimkiewicz made one of two from the free throw line and stole the last effort in-bounds pass from the Explorers to clinch the victory.
Richmond (8-11, 1-4 A-10) was outscored 16-7 in the fourth quarter after going 2-for-13 from the field. The Spiders did outrebound the Explorers 47-43, including 24 offensive rebounds. Richmond held La Salle to 30.6 percent from the field (19-for-62) and just 7-for-28 from the three-point line.
Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) led the team with 11 points and six rebounds. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) added 11 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Richmond fell behind 21-11 after the first quarter after La Salle hit five three-pointers to build a 10-point lead. The Spiders had the game tied at 11-11 after a free throw by Holt with 3:16 left in the quarter. The Explorers ended the quarter on a 10-0 run.
The Spiders had an outstanding second quarter to go into halftime with a four-point lead at 36-32. Richmond had 25 points in the second with Holt scoring nine points in the quarter. Hinds-Clarke had five points and two rebounds in the quarter. The Spiders held La Salle to just 11 points on 4-for-15 from the field.
Richmond continued to build its lead in the third quarter going up by 14 points at 56-42 with 1:07 left. The Spiders ended the quarter with a 11-point lead at 56-45. Carpenter scored five of her 11 points in the third quarter.
The Explorers wouldn't go away cutting the lead to as close as one point in the fourth quarter but never took the lead. Deja King hit two free throws with 19 seconds left to make the score 62-61. The Spiders finished with 18 bench points, 36 points in the paint and 23 second chance points.
Richmond will remain home to face first-place Davidson on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Robins Center.
