Spiders Fall on the Road At UMass
01/29/2020 | Women's Basketball
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team fell victim to a hot-shooting UMass team in a 64-50 road loss on Wednesday afternoon at the Mullins Center. UMass hit 10 three-pointers in the win.
"We ran into a hot shooting team today that played with a lot of fire," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "We did some nice things but seemingly just couldn't finish a few key possessions on both ends of the floor. When we are moving the ball and hitting on our defensive rotations we can look like a very good team. We look forward to a great opportunity to fix some things and get back at it on Sunday."
Richmond (9-12, 2-5 A-10) just couldn't overcome a strong shooting day from UMass. The Minutewomen shot 41.8 percent from the field (23-for-55) and were 10-for-19 from the three-point line. Sam Breen led the way with 26 points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) finished with 15 points and was 4-for-8 from the three-point line. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) had 13 points and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) added eight points, a career-high five assists and two steals.
Richmond started fast as Hinds-Clarke scored the first six points of two steals and a jumper in the first quarter. Holt gave the Spiders a 9-4 lead after a three-pointer with 4:48 left in the quarter. The Minutewomen would respond with a 7-0 run to take their first lead after a three-pointer from Hailey Leidel.
Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) answered with a three-pointer to stop the run and give Richmond a 12-11 lead. UMass hit a three-pointer to take the lead back at 14-12. The quarter would end with UMass holding a 16-14 lead.
The Minutewomen would build a 24-16 lead in the second quarter after a three-pointer from Vashnie Perry with 6:21 on the clock. The Spiders made a run to cut the lead to one point at 24-23 after a jumper by junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.). UMass would hold Richmond scoreless for the rest of the second quarter and finish with a 5-0 run to lead 29-23 at halftime.
Richmond tried to cut into the lead in the third quarter but UMass outscored the Spiders 18-17 to lead 47-40 after three quarters. UMass continued to hit the long ball going 4-for-6 from deep in the third quarter. In the final quarter, Richmond was held to just 10 points off 4-for-11 shooting and just couldn't get any closer.
The Spiders ended up with 18 turnovers and were outscored in the paint 26-22. UMass finished the game with just 13 turnovers and dished out 18 assists.
Richmond will return home to the Robins Center to face St. Bonaventure on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m.
