Spiders Drop A-10 Road Opener At Saint Joseph’s
01/04/2020 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team fell short in its Atlantic 10 opener on the road at Saint Joseph's, 67-56, Saturday afternoon at Hagan Arena. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with a game-high 18 points.
"A disappointing start to conference play," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I thought they were great defensively and they have been all season. We gave them a lot of high percentage shots and they played hard. I do trust we can get better and tougher. I look forward to getting back on the practice court with our group and show some improvement."
The Spiders (7-8, 0-1 A-10) were held to 16.7 percent shooting from the three-point line (2-for-12) and outrebounded 34-22 in the loss. Saint Joseph's improves to 7-6 and is 1-0 in league play. The Hawks were led by Katie Jekot who scored 17 points and dished out six assists. Saint Joseph's just couldn't miss shooting 56.9 percent (29-for-51) and hit six three-pointers.
Hinds-Clarke also went 6-for-7 from the free throw line and sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) added 12 points. Senior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds off the bench.
Richmond trailed 32-26 at halftime despite going 0-for-7 from the three-point line. The Spiders stayed in the game thanks to 13 points from Hinds-Clarke and six points from sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Alabama). Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter but Richmond scored the last four points to make it 16-10.
In the second quarter, the Spiders got within four at 18-14 after a Hinds-Clarke jumper but couldn't get closer. The Hawks used four three-pointers to keep their lead after two quarters. Saint Joseph's had a 30-20 lead with 2:58 remaining in the second quarter but the Spiders went on a 6-2 run to get within six at 32-26.
The Hawks took control in the third quarter outscoring the Spiders 20-13. Richmond was just 2-for-7 from the field but went 8-for-8 from the free throw line to keep it close. Saint Joseph's hit two more three-pointers and was 8-for-13 from the floor. Richmond got within three points at 34-31 but the Hawks responded with a 9-0 to regain a 12-point lead.
In the final quarter, the Hawks went on a 10-2 run to put the game out of reach with a 62-41 lead with 6:26 remaining. The Spiders kept fighting only allowing five points the rest of the game but came up short. Richmond ended the game on a 15-5 run holding Saint Joseph's scoreless for the final two minutes.
Richmond will continue its road swing with a trip to Rhode Island on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m.
