Spiders Return With A-10 Showdown Against VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team returns to action with an Atlantic 10 showdown against crosstown rival VCU on Sunday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Robins Center. ABOUT VCU
VCU was picked to win the Atlantic 10 Conference in the preseason poll with five senior leaders returning. The Rams have gotten off to a slow start at 2-5 with losses against Arizona State (49-40), Stephen F. Austin (71-66), ODU (81-76 OT), ECU (58-55) and Vanderbilt (90-81). Three of the five losses have come by five points or less. Senior Tera Reed leads the team in scoring at 17.8 points per game and classmate Taya Robinson is second at 13.6 points per game. Freshman Sarah Te-Biasu is third at 12.4 points per game. Senior Sydnei Archie leads the team in rebounding at 6.2 boards per game.
HISTORY AGAINST VCU
This will be the 85th meeting all-time between the two teams with VCU leading 44-40 and the Rams have won the last four meetings. In the last meeting, VCU earned a 57-42 win on Feb. 5, 2020 at the Robins Center. A tough 24-7 second quarter proved to be the difference as Taya Robinson led VCU with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Claire Holt led the Spiders with 16 points. Richmond's last win against VCU came on Feb. 18, 2018 in a 59-54 win at the Robins Center. Jaide Hinds-Clarke and Micaela Parson each finished with 12 points apiece. The Spiders build a nine-point halftime lead after outscoring VCU, 17-9, in the second quarter.
SPIDERS BLOCK PARTY
The Richmond women's basketball team is ranked 34th in the nation in total blocks with 25 as a team through four games played. Only VCU (27) has more blocks in the A-10. The nine blocks against Gardner-Webb was only three away from tying the school record of 12 set against UNCG on Dec. 8, 2012. The Spiders finished with six blocks in the road win at William & Mary.
BUDNIK SITS 10TH IN THE NATION IN BLOCKS
Freshman Addie Budnik finished with a career-high five blocks against Gardner-Webb and is 10th in the nation in total blocks with 14 through four games. Budnik's 14 blocks is the most out of all the freshmen in the NCAA leading Texas' DeYona Gaston who has 12 in five games. Budnik is sixth in blocks per game at 3.50. Budnik had three blocks against William & Mary.
ADDIE BUDNIK NAMED A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman forward Addie Budnik was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Dec. 7. Budnik averaged 13.3 points per game, five rebounds, four blocks and shot 71.4 percent from the field. Budnik only missed six total shots on the week and scored a career-high 23 points at William & Mary. It is the first Rookie of the Week honor since Jaide Hinds-Clarke was awarded in the 2016-17 season.
DISHING OUT DIMES
UR finished with 19 assists against William & Mary and has 67 in four games, which is fourth in the Atlantic 10 A-10. The Spiders are 101st in the nation in total assists. Three Richmond players have dished out 10 or more assists in Claire Holt (13), Grace Townsend (13) and Elaina Chapman (10). Richmond dished out a career-high 21 as a team in a home win against Gardner-Webb.
