Richmond Continues Home Stand Against Gardner-Webb

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team will host Gardner-Webb in a quick turnaround on Friday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m. inside the Robins Center. SPIDERS WIN HOME OPENER AGAINST NAVY BY 16 POINTS
The University of Richmond women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 65-49 win against Navy in the 2020-21 home opener at the Robins Center. Richmond outscored Navy 22-17 in the first quarter and kept building their lead throughout the game. Navy never got closer than four points and Richmond led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Four players finished in double-figures with junior Claire Holt leading the way with 14 points and three assists. Freshman Siobhan Ryan added 13 points and hit three three-pointers. Junior Kate Klimkiewicz scored 10 points and freshman Addie Budnik had 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and four blocks. The Spiders shot 41.1 percent (23-for-56 from the field) and hit 10 three-pointers in the victory.
The 16-point win against Navy was the largest margin of victory since Jan. 6, 2018 vs. La Salle, a span of 80 games. Roussell improved to 2-0 in home openers.
ABOUT GARDNER-WEBB
Gardner-Webb is 0-2 on the season with losses against Elon (88-60) and at Auburn (97-61). The Runnin' Bulldogs are led by Alasia Smith who is averaging 15.5 points per game and tied for the team lead with four three-pointers made. Smith also leads the team in rebounding at 8.0 boards per game. Jhessyka Williams is second on the team at 11 points per game and is second in rebounding at 7.0 boards per game. Gardner-Webb is shooting 33.3 percent from the field (41-for-123) and 28.6 percent from the three-point line (16-for-56). They are having trouble with turnovers with 48 (24.0 per game) in two games. This will be the first meeting all-time between the two teams.
VETERANS CONTINUE TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP
Juniors Claire Holt (13 ppg) & Kate Klimkiewicz (12 ppg) are leading the team in scoring in the first two games. Holt led the team in scoring with 14 points against Navy. Klimkiewicz added 10 points and five rebounds. Klimkiewicz has seven steals in two games and Holt leads the team with 5 three-pointers made. Klimkiewicz is tied for second in rebounding (4.5 per game) and Holt has six assists.
CHAPMAN GRABS CAREER-HIGH 14 REBOUNDS VS. NAVY
Sophomore Elaina Chapman has started the first two games and is providing a solid presence down low for the Spiders. Chapman grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds against Navy. 11 of those 14 rebounds were on the defensive end. Chapman stuffed the stat sheet with two steals and two blocks against the Midshipmen. Chapman leads the team in rebounding at 9.5 boards per game.
BUDNIK COMING UP BIG DEFENSIVELY
Freshman Addie Budnik is providing a spark off the bench for Richmond and leads the team with six blocks in two games. Budnik had four blocks against Navy and two in the season opener at Virginia Tech. Budnik also is tied with second in rebounding with nine rebounds in two games. Budnik grabbed six defensive rebounds against Navy. Her six blocks are 12th in the nation.
