Klimkiewicz Career High Pushes Spiders Past Gardner-Webb
12/04/2020 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team received a career-high night from junior Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) who scored 25 points in an 85-73 win Friday night at the Robins Center. Klimkiewicz added nine rebounds and shot 9-for-16 from the field.
The 85 points scored by Richmond is the most since 2017 when the Spiders scored 100 points against Savannah State. Richmond shot a blistering 59.6 percent from the field (34-for-57), the highest mark in the Aaron Roussell era and most in four seasons. It is the first time Richmond has won back-to-back double-digit games since the 2016-17 season.
"I thought it was a very fast game and a high scoring game," Aaron Roussell said. "We had 26 turnovers and gave up 21 offensive rebounds but you win a game. A lot of mistakes early but we were able to bounce back from them. I thought Kate's shot selection was really good today. She made some really good decisions and was able to make some easy ones early."
The Spiders (2-1) finished with four players in double-figures with Klimkiewicz leading the way with 25 points. Junior Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) added 14 points and four assists. Freshman Siobhan Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored 13 points and classmate Grace Townsend (Midlothian, Va.) finished with a season-high 14 points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals.
Gardner-Webb came out swinging early with a 4-0 lead in the first two minutes but Richmond would respond. The Spiders answered with a 9-4 run in the next four minutes capped by a Klimkiewicz layup with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter. UR would score 26 points in the quarter to lead by 11 after one. Holt and Klimkiewicz each scored seven points apiece.
In the second quarter, Richmond increased their lead to14 points after a couple of free throws by Klimkiewicz with 7:28 left on the clock. Gardner-Webb got within 10 points after a three-pointer from Lauren Bevis to make the score 37-27. Richmond ended the quarter on a 10-4 run to push the lead back to 16 points at 47-31. Klimkiewicz led all scorers with 15 points at halftime.
Gardner-Webb outscored the Spiders in the third quarter, 21-20. The Runnin' Bulldogs used their pressure to get within 10 points at 60-50 but Richmond would score the next seven points and held a 67-52 advantage after three quarters. The Spiders were a little sloppy with the basketball with five turnovers in the third quarter alone.
In the final quarter, Gardner-Webb got within 10 points again at 72-62 with 7:21 remaining in the game after a fast break layup from Jhessyka Williams. The Spiders kept answering by scoring the next five points, including a dagger three-pointer from Ryan with 4:50 on the clock. Townsend would put the icing on the cake with back-to-back three-pointers with just under two minutes left.
Richmond was active defensively with nine blocks, including five from freshman Addie Budnik (Highland Park, Ill.). Budnik also grabbed five rebounds and scored seven points off the bench. The nine blocks by Richmond as a team is the most in a game since Nov. 16, 2014 against Georgetown.
The Spiders travel down the road to face William & Mary on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. in Williamsburg.
