12/06/2020 | Women's Basketball
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team won their third-straight game in the week thanks to a career-high 23 points from freshman Addie Budnik (Highland Park, Ill.) in a 72-55 road win at William & Mary Sunday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
The Spiders improve to 3-1 on the season with three-straight wins and finished the week with a 17-point win on the road at William & Mary. Richmond also started 3-1 last season in head coach Aaron Roussell's first season.
"It is great to be 3-1," Roussell said. "We have a chance here to feel differently with three games in five days. I am really happy for our players and now they can concentrate on academics with finals coming up. A lot of great individual efforts but I really feel we are gelling as a team."
Budnik led the team with a career-high 23 points off 8-for-9 shooting and had three blocks. Richmond held the Tribe to 55 points and outrebounded them 38-27. Juniors Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) and Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) each finished with 11 points apiece. Freshmen Siobhan Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored eight points and classmate Grace Townsend (Midlothian, Va.) dished out five assists.
UR had another solid shooting performance at 49.1 percent (26-for-53) and finished with 19 assists. Richmond also got to the free throw line going 15-for-18 and build a 22-point lead after three quarters.
The Tribe took an early 3-0 lead off a three-pointer by Nyla Pollard but Richmond went on a 10-2 run to lead 10-5 after a layup from Budnik. William & Mary got within 12-10 off a three-pointer by Sydney Wagner but Budnik answered for the Spiders with a three-pointer. UR ended the first quarter with a 19-14 lead after Klimkiewicz scored the last four points.
In the second quarter, Richmond opened with eight-straight points capped off by a layup from Klimkiewicz to force a timeout from William & Mary. The Tribe hit a couple of three-pointers to cut the lead to 29-20 with 4:12 left in the quarter. UR increased their lead to 37-23 after an offensive rebound by Budnik led to a layup for Klimkiewicz. The Tribe made a last second layup to make the halftime score 40-25.
Richmond continued to play frontrunner by outscoring William & Mary, 19-12, in the third quarter. Senior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) and sophomore Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) each had four points in the quarter. Budnik led the team with five points in the third.
William & Mary opened the final quarter with a 13-3 run to cut the lead to 62-50 with 5:38 left on the clock. UR answered with a three-pointer by Budnik, which proved to be the dagger. The Spiders outscored the Tribe 7-5 the rest of the game and earned their first road win of the season.
On the defensive end, the Spiders finished with six blocks, including three from Budnik. Budnik has 14 blocks in four games for Richmond.
"I thought Addie was fantastic today on both ends. I think she really disrupted things defensively. A great road win and look forward to getting back home next weekend."
Richmond will have seven days off for final exams and will welcome Saint Francis to the Robins Center on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m.
