02/10/2020 | Men's Golf
MOBILE, Ala. -- A pair of freshmen led the Spiders on the first day of the Mobile Sports Authority Collegiate, played Monday at Magnolia Grove Golf Club. Lou Baker carded rounds of 69 and 74 and is tied for 29th in the field at 143 (-1) while Ben Cooper is tied for 35th at 144 (E) after scores of 77 and 67 in the first two rounds. As a team, the Spiders are tied for 10th at 580 (+4) with 18 holes remaining in the event, their first of the spring.
"I saw some good things from the guys for the first competitive rounds of the season," said coach Adam Decker. "Our ball striking was good, but we need to capitalize on some of the birdie looks we are getting on the greens."
Baker got the Spiders going early on Monday, shooting a three-under 69 to finish the opening round inside the top 10 among the field of 80. Sophomore Michael Childress was also in red figures in the first round, shooting 70 (-2). Junior Michael Baker registered an even-par 72 on Monday morning while Cooper and sophomore Carter Cook shot matching rounds of 77 (+5).Â
Cooper rebounded in Monday's afternoon's second round with a 67 (-5), the lowest score of his Spiders career and tied for the 10th-lowest round in team history. Cooper was the only Spider at or under par in the afternoon, as Lou Baker carded a 74 (+2), one shot in front of Michael Baker and two shots clear of Childress. A team score of 292 (+4) in the second round pulled the Spiders two spots down the leaderboard into a tie for 10th.Â
The Spiders will start Tuesday's third and final round at 9 AM ET.Â
