02/14/2020 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The 19th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse team used a strong fourth quarter to notch its first win of the 2020 season on a cold Friday night at Robins Stadium as the Spiders defeated the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Marist Red Foxes 13-11. The Spiders out-scored Marist 5-2 in the fourth quarter, including four-straight in the opening 4:25 of the period to break open the tied contest.
Freshman attack Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) continued his torrid pace to start his career, scoring a career-high four goals as the Spiders had three players with hat tricks in the win. Connell has scored seven goals in his first two career games, including the career-high in his first collegiate start Friday.
Sophomore attack Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) added his first career hat trick while junior midfielder Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) tallied his second-straight three-goal game of the year. Junior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) posted a season-high six points in the win, dishing out a career-high four assists and adding two goals. The four assists rank fifth all-time in Richmond single-game history.
Richmond (1-1) opened to a 3-1 lead early in the game as Dunn, Savoca and Lanchbury all found the back of the net early on. Marist (1-1) kept battling back, tying the game at 3-3, including a goal with 0.9 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The teams traded goals in the second quarter, entering the halftime break deadlocked at 6-6.
The Spiders scored the first two of the third quarter as Dunn and Connell scored 31 seconds apart, but the Red Foxes answered with two of their own including a goal with 1.7 seconds remaining in the period.
Richmond responded to the adversity in commanding fashion, scoring the first four goals of the fourth quarter, taking a 12-8 lead at the 10:35 mark. Dunn and Connell again traded goals, this time 46 seconds apart. Savoca added another goal less than a minute later and Connell scored his fourth of the game for the four-goal lead.
After Marist responded with a goal, Savoca scored his third of the night off an assist from Brett Randall (Brielle, N.J.), halting the momentum. The Red Foxes pushed late, scoring two goals down the stretch but the Spiders were able to maintain possession in the closing minutes securing the two-goal victory.
The Spiders continue their three-game home stand to open the season Tuesday afternoon when they welcome in Navy. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
