02/14/2020 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. – Richmond baseball suffered a 7-6 loss to the fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs at Foley Field Friday night. The Spiders held a 6-2 advantage after four innings, but the Bulldogs chipped away at the lead before scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to take the season opener from the Spiders.
Redshirt junior Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) started his third consecutive opening day on the mound. Miller went 3.2 innings, scattering four hits and a pair of earned runs to go with four strikeouts. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) was first in relief, going 3.2 innings allowing three runs and striking out four. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) tossed a clean eighth before Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) suffered the loss. DeLarso gave up two unearned runs on three hits in 0.2 innings of work.
The Spider offense was paced by newcomer Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.). Blakely finished the evening 4-for-5 with four singles and two RBI. Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 in the leadoff spot, driving in two runs, scoring twice and hitting the first home run of the season. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a 2-for-5 performance with a homer of his own, scoring twice.
The Bulldogs wasted no time getting on the board, plating a run in the top of the first. Sophomore Ben Anderson singled and moved to second after a walk. Tucker Bradley followed with a single to left to bring in the first run of the contest. Georgia doubled up their lead with a solo home run from Cole Tate in the bottom of the second.
The Spiders got things rolling the second time through the lineup. Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) turned the lineup over after being hit by a pitch. Hipsman and Toso had back-to-back infield hits to load them up for Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.). Forte dribbled one up the first baseline, but drove a run in and advanced Hipsman and Toso. Blakely drove a single through the right side to drive in a pair and give the Spiders the lead at 3-2.
Richmond got the long ball working in the top of the fourth inning. Peyton Sanderson (Austin, Texas) got his first collegiate single to put a runner on as Hipsman hit the first homer of the season. Toso followed with a solo homer of his own to extend the lead to 6-2.
The Bulldogs wouldn't go away as they scratched solo runs across in the bottom of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to cut the Spider lead down to 6-5.
After a scoreless eighth, Georgia got their rally going in the final frame. Garrett Blaylock led off with a solo home run before Patrick Sullivan singled and was lifted for a pinch runner. A ground out moved him into scoring position before Cole Tate dropped a single to centerfield to score the game-winning run.
Richmond and the Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Foley Field.
