Lass's First Career Hit Drives in a Run in Loss at No. 4 Georgia
02/15/2020 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. – Richmond baseball suffered a 9-3 loss to the fourth- ranked Georgia Bulldogs at Foley Field Saturday afternoon. The Spiders rebounded after going down early, but Georgia took home the win. The Spiders fall to 0-2 on the season as Georgia improves to 2-0.
"I'm proud of the fight this team showed this afternoon." Head coach Tracy Woodson said, "it would have been easy to give up after going down 7-0, but we fought and continued to put ourselves in a position to chip away at the lead. Credit to Georgia, they're a solid team, but I'm proud of the fight and the toughness we showed in that game."
Collin Lowe (Ridgefield, Conn.) got the start Saturday afternoon. Lowe worked 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs; six earned with two strikeouts in his first appearance since 2018. Also making their first appearance since 2018 was James Hulbert (Harrison, N.Y.). Hulbert worked the next 3.2 innings, allowing four hits, one earned run and struck out two. Theo Farynick (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) made the first appearance of his career in the eighth. The freshman gave up two hits, and a run in his first outing.
At the plate, Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y) was a tough out in the top of the lineup, finishing 2-for-4. Davis Payne (Rexford, N.Y.) started as the designated hitter, going 1-for-2 and scoring once before being lifted for Daniel Leckie (Suffield, Conn.). Leckie doubled for his first hit as a Spider before coming around to score later in the inning. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Zach Lass (Mechanicsville, Va.) also had hits. Lass's was the first of his career after getting his first start behind the plate.
The Bulldogs got on the board right away, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Lead-off man Ben Anderson singled and came around to score from first on a double from Cam Shepard. Tucker Bradley hit his first home run of the season and the Bulldogs went up 3-0. In the second frame, Georgia added a solo run. Anderson was hit by a pitch and moved to third after a stolen base and a Spider error. Again, it was Bradley with a base knock to drive in the fourth run of the afternoon.
Georgia added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a hit batter, a walk and three singles to take a 7-0 lead.
The Spiders got a run back in the top of the fifth inning. Payne led off the frame by hooking a line drive down the line in right for a lead-off double and moved to third following a passed ball. Lass connected on his first career hit through the left side to bring in Payne.
Richmond added two more in the sixth. After a walk to Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.), Leckie connected on a pinch-hit double to put two in scoring position. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) drove a fly ball to deep center field to score a run on the sacrifice fly, and a passed ball brought in Leckie to cut the lead to 7-3.
Georgia added a solo run in the seventh and eighth innings to keep the Spiders at bay.
Richmond and Georgia will finish the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
