Toso's Home Run Not Enough as Baseball Falls at No. 4 Georgia
02/16/2020 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. – Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) left the yard for the second time of the weekend Sunday afternoon, but his three-run homer wasn't enough to take down the fourth-ranked team in the country. The Georgia Bulldogs rallied to score five runs in the middle three innings and held off the Spiders late as Richmond fell 5-4. Richmond falls to 0-3 on the year, with the Bulldogs improving to 3-0.
"The results on the scoreboard weren't what we wanted this weekend, but I'm very encouraged by our performance." Head coach Tracy Woodson said, "Our guys went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the country and gave them all they could handle. We have to clean some things up in the bullpen, but our offensive approach against a tough pitching staff is very encouraging. I'm proud of the way our team played this weekend."
Richmond combined for seven hits in the finale on Sunday, led by a pair of two-hit games from redshirt senior Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.). Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.), Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) and Toso each added hits, and Toso's hit was the loudest of the day.
Sophomore Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) got the start and went 4.1 innings with four strikeouts, allowing two runs, one earned. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) was first in, tossing a third of an inning before giving way to Matt Olson (Smyrna, Ga.). Olson tallied a strikeout and Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) was next on, throwing 0.2 without allowing a run. Mason Majors (Kansas City, Mo.) tossed a clean seventh, with Sammy Senders (Potomac, Md.) adding a clean eighth with a strikeout.
The Spiders broke open the scoreless game in the top of the third inning. Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) turned the lineup over after drawing a walk and Hipsman stayed hot with a single to put two on. Toso left the yard for the second time of the season, this time to left to put the Spiders up, 3-0.
Georgia answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo run with an RBI single-from Patrick Sullivan. The Bulldogs took advantage of a couple free passes in the fifth to score a pair, one on a Garrett Blaylock sacrifice fly and another after a wild pitch that was initially ruled an out at the plate before replay review overturned it and the second run was safe.
Richmond responded in the fifth with a two-out rally. Forte, Blakely and Leckie combined for three-straight singles to bring in Forte and extend the lead back to three.
The Bulldogs continued their comeback into the sixth, plating two more runs and taking the lead. A lead-off single came around to score after a sacrifice bunt by Shane Marshall. The ball was up the first baseline and, in an attempt to avoid the runner, the throw was low and kicked off the first baseman's foot allowing Cheney Rogers to score. Another sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third before Ben Anderson doubled down the left field line to drive in the run and go up 5-4.
Richmond opens the home schedule Tuesday afternoon as it hosts the James Madison Dukes at 1:30 p.m. at Pitt Field.
