RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team pounced on mistakes by Lehigh in the fifth inning, breaking open the game after scoring five runs in the frame to win 9-4 Saturday.
Richmond (1-4) linked a lead-off walk, a double by Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and a two-run error in the fifth inning to break the 3-3 tie and push Lehigh starter Mason Black from the game. After a second Lehigh error of the frame, Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) blasted a three-run home run to center field, bringing Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) and Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) around to score.
Richmond would add their ninth run of the game in the sixth when Forte scored from third on a ground out by Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.).
It was a pitcher's duel until the Spiders broke through to Lehigh's (0-4) starter Black. Daniel Little (Nicholasville, K.Y.) laced a two-out double to left center before Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) got hit by a pitch. A Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) base hit up the middle scored Little for the Spiders first run of the day.
Lehigh answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth, picking up two runs on four hits, including a double, off of Richmond starter Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.). Miller (1-0) would give up a third run in the top of the fifth, but collected the win after a five-inning performance. He scattered three runs on eight hits and struck out four.
In the bottom of the fourth, Little laced a single through the right side of the infield, picking up Schulefand and Blakely to take a 3-2 lead.
Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) went two innings in relief, striking out four and allowing two hits. Theo Farynick (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y) allowed a run, two walks and a strikeout in a third of an inning while Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) closed the door on the Mountain Hawks over 1.2 innings of work, striking out four and walking one.
Lehigh's Black (0-2) took the loss, allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits. He struck out nine and walked two over four-plus innings of work for the Mountain Hawks.
The series wraps up Sunday with a double-header beginning at 10 a.m. at Pitt Field.
