Richmond Falls In A-10 Regular Season Finale At George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team held a one-point lead at halftime but a five-point third quarter was the difference in a 50-40 road loss at George Washington Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Richmond (14-16, 7-9 A-10) finished with a season-low 40 points and only scored five points in the first and third quarters. The Spiders shot just 28 percent from the field (14-for-50) and 20 percent from the three-point line (4-for-20). The Spiders also missed seven free throws in the loss.
Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) led the team with nine points and two rebounds. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) had fve points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) finished with five points. Junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) added seven points and sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) scored seven points.
Richmond held a 21-20 lead after two quarters. Carpenter, Parson and Hinds-Clarke each scored five points apiece. Both teams were in a defensive battle after a first quarter that saw just 14 points combined.
Klimkiewicz hit a three-pointer to give Richmond a 3-0 lead after a scoreless first five minutes of the first quarter. Both teams combined to shoot 0-for-16 from the field. George Washington went on a 6-0 run to take a 6-3 lead but Hinds-Clarke answered with a layup. GW's Faith Blethen hit a three-pointer to push their lead to 9-5 after one quarter.
The Spiders quickly tied the game with back-to-back jumpers from Hinds-Clarke and Holt to make it 9-9. The second quarter had a couple of ties and lead changes as George Washington went ahead 20-15 off a layup from Alexandra Maund. Richmond closed the second quarter on a 6-0 run capped by two free throws from Carpenter.
In the third quarter, George Washington went on a 9-0 to open up a 29-21 lead. Blethen hit a three-pointer to push the lead to 35-26 with 2:40 left in the third quarter. The Colonials ended the quarter scoring the last five points. The Spiders only scored five points and shot 2-for-12 to enter the fourth quarter with a 15-point deficit.
Richmond played a solid fourth quarter but couldn't overcome its shooting woes in the third. The Spiders outscored George Washington 14-10 in the final quarter. Hinds-Clarke and sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) each scored four points in the quarter.
Richmond was able to force 17 turnovers for George Washington but only converted 11 points from those opportunities. The Colonials only had two players in double figures with Blethen leading the way with 13 points. Maund added 11 points and five rebounds on her Senior Day.
The Spiders will head back to George Washington for an A-10 Championship rematch on Tuesday, March 3, at 7 p.m. The Colonials finished as the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 seeded Richmond.
