Richmond Rematch At GW Starts A-10 Championship Journey

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team will open the 2020 A-10 Championship with a first-round matchup at eighth seeded George Washington in a rematch from Saturday on Tuesday, March 3, at 7 p.m.
SPIDERS BEGIN POSTSEASON PLAY AT GW
Richmond begins postseason play as the No. 9 seed and will face No. 8 George Washington on the road on March 3 at 7 p.m. Richmond is 12-18 all-time in Atlantic 10 Tournament games. Last season, the Spiders lost on the road at Saint Louis 58-49 almost pulling off an upset as the No. 11 seed. Richmond last won an A-10 Tournament game on Feb. 27, 2018 in a home win against Davidson 62-53. The Spiders lost in the quarterfinals to Dayton 67-58 on March 2, 2018. The last NCAA Tournament berth for Richmond was on March 20, 2005 in a loss to Florida State 87-54.
COACH ROUSSELL POSTSEASON EXPERIENCE
First-year head coach Aaron Roussell has led multiple teams to postseason success, including two NCAA Tournament berths at Bucknell and two trips to the WNIT at Bucknell. Roussell also went to the NCAA Tournament four times as head coach at Chicago. In 2012-13, Roussell in his first-year at Bucknell pulled off an upset against third-seeded American 46-43 as the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON
George Washington is 14-15 overall and finished 8-8 in Atlantic 10 play. The Colonials earned the eighth seed and the right to host Richmond in a rematch. George Washington is led by graduate transfer Alexandra Maund (Yale) who is averaging 11.2 points per game and scored 11 points in the win against the Spiders. Maund set a new career-high with 27 points in a win against Duquesne on Feb. 22. George Washington has won three games in a row and is 7-7 at home this season. Freshman Faith Blethen who is averaging six points per game, finished with 13 points against Richmond.
HISTORY AGAINST GEORGE WASHINGTON
This will be the 44th meeting all-time between the two teams with George Washington holding a 28-15 record. The Colonials win on Feb. 29 snapped a two-game winning streak for Richmond in the all-time series. The Spiders have played George Washington four times in postseason play going 0-4 in those games. The last meeting came in the A-10 Tournament on March 8, 2013 in a 53-39 loss. Richmond also played George Washington in an NCAA Tournament game on March 13, 1991 in a 73-62 loss.
LAST TIME OUT
Richmond fell 50-40 at George Washington in the A-10 regular season finale on Feb. 29. The Spiders finished the A-10 season with a 7-9 record and earned the ninth seed in the A-10 Championship. The Spiders held a one-point lead (21-20) after two quarters but only managed to score five points in the third quarter. With the loss, Richmond will return for a rematch in the A-10 Championship first round hosted by George Washington.
The Spiders finished with a season-low 40 points but did make a run in the fourth quarter outscoring George Washington, 14-10. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke led the team with nine points and three steals. Alex Parson and Aniyah Carpenter each finished with seven points apiece.
Richmond had a tough shooting night at 28.0 percent (14-for-50) and were just 53.3 percent from the free throw line (8-for-15).
