Women’s Lacrosse Improves To 6-0 With Win Over Liberty

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team remain undefeated and continued its best start in program history Saturday as the Spiders turned in a convincing 19-8 victory over Liberty at Robins Stadium. The victory improves the Spiders to 6-0 on the year and Richmond has now out-scored its opponents by a 107-44 margin.
Junior attack Sam Geiersbach (West Babylon, N.Y.) led three Spiders with hat tricks in the win, finishing with eight points on the day. Geiersbach scored three goals and handed out five assists Saturday just one game after she became the fastest player in program history to reach the 200-career point mark. Her eight points are a season-high and the most for her since scoring nine points against Duquesne last year.
Freshman attack Arden Tierney (Port Washington, N.Y.) continued her strong play on the year adding four more goals and a game-high 11 draw controls. Tierney has scored 22 goals in six games this year, including four games with three or more tallies. Sophomore Marina Miller (Wexford, Pa.) added three goals of her own for her first career hat trick.
Senior goalie Megan Gianforte (Brielle, N.J.) posted 14 saves in the victory, picking up her 53rd career win. She also added a team-high four ground balls in the win while freshman Sophia DiCenso (Foxboro, Mass.) caused a team-high three turnovers to lead the defense.
The Spiders started quickly as Geiersbach scored just 11 seconds into the contest and Richmond scored the first five goals of the game. Nicole Concannon (Syosset, N.Y.) and Julie Schmuckler (New Vernon, N.J.) added back-to-back goals before Miller and Madison Ostrick (Medford, N.Y.) rounded out the five-goal burst just 9:10 into the contest.
Lauren Kingsbury (Pennington, N.J.) and Tierney would answer Liberty goals back and forth before the Spiders scored the final two of the half, taking a 9-3 lead into the break. Tierney and Ostrick scored the final two of the first half, including Ostrick's goal in the final minute.
Richmond scored the first three to open the second half, extending the lead to 12-3. Kendall Duffy (Sinking Spring, Pa.) put the Spiders in front by nine with her first of two goals on the day before adding her second for a 13-4 lead.
The Flames (2-3) would score three-straight goals to narrow the gap to 13-7 but Richmond responded with three straight and five out of the last seven goals for the nine-goal victory. Geiersbach and Tierney started the game-ending run while Schmuckler and Miller added goals before Tierney capped the victory with her 22nd goal of the season.
The Spiders hit the road next weekend for their final non-conference road game of the year, travelling to Old Dominion March 7 for a 1 p.m. contest.
