Baseball Rallies Late to Defeat Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Spider baseball battled back to score 13 runs over the final four innings for a come-from-behind victory to defeat the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 14-7 Wednesday afternoon at Nielsen Field at CSU Ballpark. The Spiders offense used a patient approach to draw 18 walks in the victory. Richmond improves to 5-12 on the season, while Charleston Southern falls to 7-12.
The Richmond pitching staff was busy as eight pitchers threw in the victory. Sammy Senders (Potomac, Md.) got the ball to start. He threw 1.1 innings, allowing three runs with three strikeouts. Matt Olson (Smyrna, Ga.) came on in relief and got out of the second, recording a pair of outs. Lowell Schipper (Santa Monica, Calif.) threw the third, allowing a run on a hit. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) worked an inning, allowing a run without allowing a hit.
Theo Farynick (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) worked a clean fifth with a strikeout. Eli Larson (Mill Valley, Calif.) started the sixth, tossing two thirds of an inning without allowing a run. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) came on in relief of Larson, working out of a bases loaded jam before putting up another zero in the seventh. James Hulbert (Harrison, N.Y.) tossed the final two innings, allowing two runs, one earned and struck out two to earn his second save of the season.
The Spider offense used a patient approach at the plate to do its damage, working 18 walks in the game to go with four hit batters. Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) earned the only multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a 1-for-6 game with three RBI with a double.
Charleston Southern got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning as they plated three runs by virtue of a double, a wild pitch and an RBI ground out.
Richmond responded with a run of its own in the top of the third. Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) singled to right, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third with a sacrifice bunt and scored on another wild pitch.
The Bucs added solo runs in the third and fourth innings. The third inning run came on a sacrifice fly to center field and the run in the fourth came in on a groundout.
The Spiders rallied to score a pair of runs in the fifth inning. After a walk and a fielder's choice put a runner on, another walk loaded the bases. A fielder's choice brought the first run in and an error allowed the second run to score. Richmond brought it within one in the seventh. After a lead-off single and a hit batter put two on, Blakely doubled to left field to bring in the run to cut the lead to 5-4.
Richmond took the lead by plating four runs in the top of the eighth. Little led off the inning and was hit by a pitch before moving to third after Peyton Sanderson (Austin, Texas) doubled to right field. A walk to Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) loaded them up for Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) who was hit by a pitch to bring in the tying run. Blakely stepped in and singled through the left side to bring in two and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) delivered a single to center field to extend the lead to 8-5.
Charleston Southern battled right back, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single and a Spider fielding error to cut the lead to 8-7.
Richmond extended the lead in the top of the ninth. A lead-off double and two walks loaded the bases for Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) who dropped a double to right field to clear the bases and put Richmond up 11-7. The Spiders then worked five-straight walks to bring in three more and extend the lead to 14-7.
Richmond returns to action this weekend when it hosts the Spider Invitational.
