WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team earned a hard-fought road win to punch their ticket to Dayton with a 57-49 win at George Washington Tuesday night in the Atlantic 10 Championship First Round.
Richmond (15-16) moves on to the A-10 quarterfinals and a matchup against top-seeded Dayton on Friday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at UD arena.
"Obviously, a fantastic win for this group," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "To limit them to just nine second chances it was just a toughness win and a resilient effort. This was the best our kids have been in locking into a game plan. I am really proud of them for what they showed today."
Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) had a huge night scoring 15 points off 6-for-9 shooting. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) added 10 points with four rebounds. Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) and freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) combined for 16 points off the bench. Carpenter scored seven points with six rebounds and Chapman had nine points.
The Spiders finished the game shooting 43.1 percent (22-for-51) and 42.9 percent (9-for-21) from the three-point line. Richmond got 21 points off the bench and had a solid fourth quarter outscoring George Washington 19-10.
In the fourth quarter, Richmond was leading 50-49 with 2:55 remaining when Holt drained a clutch three-pointer to push the lead to 53-49. The Spider defense wouldn't allow another point and close out the game with the final four points. Richmond held George Washington to 10 points and 2-for-9 shooting in the final quarter.
Richmond started the game on fire hitting four of its first five shots to take a 9-2 lead four minutes into the game. GW answered with a 7-0 run to get within one at 10-9. The Spiders built a 15-11 lead off a jumper by Carpenter. The Colonials ended the quarter on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 17-17.
In the second quarter, George Washington scored the first nine points and held Richmond off the scoreboard for nearly seven minutes. Sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) made a layup to snap the run and Chapman hit a three-pointer to get the Spiders within four at 26-22. Carpenter hit a clutch three-pointer to make it 28-27 after two quarters. Hinds-Clarke, Squires, Carpenter and Klimkiewicz each scored five points.
In the third quarter, both teams battled scoring 11 points apiece. GW remained in front by one point after three quarters. Holt scored the first five points to put Richmond up 32-30 in the third quarter. GW answered with a 7-2 run to go ahead 37-32 off a three-pointer by Sydney Zambrotta.
