05/15/2020 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke was awarded the Dr. Leonard S. Goldberg Award for Good Citizenship.
Hinds-Clarke recently was honored with the James A. Sartain Award on April 14 and continues to pile up numerous accolades as a graduating senior at Richmond.
"I am honored and humbled to have received this award, as diversity, inclusion, and equity are very important to me," Hinds-Clarke said. "It truly sums up what it has meant to me to wear Richmond across my chest for the past four years. This award really belongs to all of the friends, family, mentors who have always supported me throughout my journey. I am excited to be continuing my next steps here at Richmond."
The Westwood, N.J. native has worked for social change on and off campus. She worked for the Office of Common Ground, where she helped to create and administer LGBTQ programs for the student body. She founded Shades of Pride, an affinity group for LGBTQ students of color at UR, upon recognizing the lack of structures and spaces that fostered a sense of community for this population. She interned for the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, where she developed and ran programs, including a week-long social justice retreat for high school students. For her campus and community activism, Jaide received a Jones Impact Award for Black Excellence, a CCE Service for Change Award, and a Diversity Richmond Black & Bold Award for leadership.
Jaide will begin her graduate studies in Sport Leadership at VCU in the fall and will intern with Spider Athletics.
Dr. Leonard S. Goldberg Award for Good Citizenship Description: The Leonard S. Goldberg Award is named in honor of Dr. Leonard S. Goldberg, who served as Vice-President of Student Development at the University of Richmond for 19 years, from 1987 to 2006. Dr. Goldberg worked diligently as an advocate for student concerns and helped to bring about important and lasting changes that benefited students across the University. The recipient of the Goldberg Award is a graduating senior who cares deeply about the institution and works tirelessly to improve it. He or she has excelled in the development of students and the University through extra-curricular involvement. Throughout his/her time here, the recipient has taken a leadership role within one or more student organizations, worked with administrative figures to bring enlightened programming to the University, helped to foster school pride, and worked to make students more aware of diversity issues.
Justification: The Goldberg Award will accomplish two things: it will honor Dr. Goldberg's years-long service to the University; and it will recognize "good citizenship" within the University as a key component of excellence for University of Richmond students.
