Spiders Return To Road Test At VCU Sunday

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team will head downtown to face crosstown rival VCU on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. at the Siegel Center. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN plus.
SPIDERS RETURN TO ACTION WITH CROSSTOWN RIVAL AT VCU
The Spiders haven't played an A-10 game since a close loss against Rhode Island, 56-53, on Jan. 15. Richmond will look to snap a five-game losing streak against VCU and lost earlier this season on Dec. 20 in a 73-49 defeat at the Robins Center.
ABOUT VCU
VCU is 6-6 overall and 4-1 in Atlantic 10 play after falling to UMass, 55-49, on Jan. 15. The Rams haven't played in nine days and are coming off their first A-10 loss of the season. VCU is 2-0 in league play in overtime games after defeating Duquesne (68-63) and St. Bonaventure (69-67). Tera Reed leads the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game and Taya Robinson is second in scoring at 13.0 points per game. Freshman Sarah Te-Biasu is tied for the team lead with 31 assists and third in scoring at 11.0 points per game.
HISTORY AGAINST VCU
This will be the 86th all-time meeting between the two teams with VCU holding a 45-40 record after winning the last five matchups. In the latest meeting on Dec. 20, VCU jumped ahead with a 25-4 first quarter and never trailed in a 73-49 win at the Robins Center. Taya Robinson scored 15 points and Sydnei Archie posted a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) in the win. Kate Klimkiewicz led all scorers with 19 points and was 5-for-6 from the three-point line. In last season's game at the Siegel Center, Richmond had a chance to tie the game late but fell short 53-50 on Jan. 17, 2020. Jaide Hinds-Clarke finished with 19 points and Tera Reed had 14 points for the Rams. Richmond had one of its best free throw shooting games going 11-for-13 (84.6 percent) from the foul line.

The Spiders lost for the first time in 2021 after winning three A-10 games in a row. Junior Kate Klimkiewicz led the team with 17 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Grace Townsend had 10 points off the bench and sophomore Elaina Chapman had eight points and five rebounds. Rhode Island outscored Richmond, 13-7, in the 4th quarter and held the Spiders scoreless in the last five minutes of the game. UR had been 6-0 when leading after three quarters.
KLIMKIEWICZ HEATING UP FROM DOWNTOWN
Junior Kate Klimkiewicz has started the new year on fire scoring 18 points at St. Bonaventure, 14 points against Duquesne, 14 points against GW and 17 points against Rhode Island. Klimkiewicz has hit a team-best 10 three-pointers in her last four games (10-for-21), including a 5-for-9 performance from downtown against the Rams. Klimkiewicz leads the team in scoring (14.4 points per game) and in three-pointers made (20).
GRACE TOWNSEND GIVING SPIDERS A SPARK OFF THE BENCH
Freshman Grace Townsend added 10 points and three assists off the bench against Rhode Island. she finished with three points, five assists and tied her season high with eight rebounds against George Washington. Townsend has dished out 19 assists in her last four games (4.7 per game) to just six turnovers. Townsend scored the eventual game-winning layup on the road against St. Bonaventure and had a season-high seven assists in the road win at Duquesne.
