01/28/2021 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference announced Thursday that the 2021 Men's Basketball Championship, presented by Air Force Reserve, will be co-hosted between the University of Richmond and VCU March 10-14, 2021. This unique, two-arena format allows the conference to ensure a safe environment for the tournament while providing an outstanding championship experience for all A-10 teams and effectively addressing the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We are extremely pleased for this partnership between the University of Richmond, the Atlantic 10 Conference and VCU that enables us to assist in providing the safest environment for an outstanding tournament experience for the league's student-athletes and coaches," Vice President and Director of Athletics John P. Hardt said. "We felt it was important to step up and do everything possible to support the A10 and our conference's flagship event. This collaboration between the two schools and the conference office will greatly enhance the ability for the A10 operate the tournament and strictly follow COVID-19 protocols. This is a unique opportunity for the University of Richmond to support the A10 Conference in hosting an event of this importance."
This will mark the first time in Robins Center history that it will host the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament (Spiders members since 2001-02). In fact, it will be the first time the Spiders have hosted a conference championship on campus since hosting the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament in 1986.
"To be able to host the A10 men's basketball tournament is an great opportunity," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "The University of Richmond Athletics Department, along with the Atlantic 10 and VCU, are determined to provide a first rate and safe experience for all coaches and student-athletes. We look forward to showcasing our facilities on the national stage, which I believe are some of the best in the entire country."
The two-site partnership will separate the four second round and quarterfinal games, traditionally played back-to-back at one site, for the first time in league history. Games 1 and 3 and games 2 and 4 will be split between the Robins Center and VCU's Siegel Center. Wednesday's opening round, Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's championship final will be played at the Robins Center. The location of each second round and quarterfinal game will be announced when championship seeding is announced.
