Three-Point Shooting Lifts Richmond In Road Win At George Mason
01/31/2021 | Women's Basketball
FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team hit a season-high 15 three-pointers, two off of tying the school record, in a 67-52 road win at George Mason Sunday at EagleBank Arena. The Spiders complete a perfect 3-0 week, including two more road wins to improve to 5-0 in A-10 road games for the first time in school history.
"We faced this team just a couple days ago so that always throws a different wrinkle into it," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I was proud of our girls to not let that game carry over into this one. We talked a lot about turnovers and we were down to just eight today, which is a huge step for our program. This was a great stepping stone for us heading into February."
Richmond has won four in a row to improve to 10-4 overall and is 7-2 in the Atlantic 10. The Spiders have eight games remaining in the A-10 slate and sit in a tie for second place. The Spiders won the rebounding battle for the fourth-straight game, 45-44, and came away with seven blocks. Richmond took care of the basketball only committing eight turnovers and dished out 19 assists. UR shot 48.4 percent from the three-point line (15-for-31) and held George Mason's leading scorer Marika Korpinen to just nine points off 3-for-14 shooting.
Freshman Addie Budnik (Highland Park, Ill.) finished with 16 points, a perfect 4-for-4 from the three-point line and five blocks. Junior Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) added eight points and nine rebounds. Junior Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) had six points off the bench, making two three-pointers. Freshman Grace Townsend (Midlothian, Va.) dished out seven assists with zero turnovers. Freshman Kylee Lewandowski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored a career-high five points and grabbed three rebounds.
Richmond couldn't miss from the three-point line shooting 56.3 percent (9-for-16) to help secure a 10-point halftime lead 35-25 at George Mason. Budnik led the way with 13 points, two assists and three blocks. Klimkiewicz added five points and Carpenter scored six points off the bench.
George Mason started the game with a three-pointer from Taylor Jameson to take an early 3-0. The Patriots also led 7-6 after a jumper from Jazmyn Doster in the first quarter. Budnik answered with a three-pointer on the other end and Mason never led again. The Spiders ended the first quarter on a 16-7 run to build a 22-14 advantage. Richmond hit 6-of-7 from deep in the first quarter.
UR outscored George Mason, 13-11, in the second quarter. Budnik didn't miss scoring five points off 2-for-2 shooting and had two blocks. Carpenter and freshman Siobhan Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) each hit three-pointers. Mason went 1-for-6 from the three-point line in the second quarter.
The Spiders continue their hot start in third quarters hitting back-to-back three-pointers from senior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) and Klimkiewicz. Richmond took a 17-point lead after a three-pointer from Budnik pushed the lead to 44-27 with 7:53 remaining in the third. The Spiders held their largest lead at 56-33 after two free throws from Maya Ettle (Bethlehem, Pa.). UR had another dominant third quarter outscoring George Mason, 23-11, thanks to eight points from Chapman.
The Patriots had their best quarter in the fourth outscoring Richmond, 16-9. The Spiders played all 16 players on the roster and were able to get valuable minutes for their underclassmen. All nine points in the fourth quarter were made on three-pointers from Parson, Klimkiewicz and senior Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.). Fee nailed the 15th three-pointer of the game with 32 seconds left.
