Richmond Resumes Play With Road Trip At Dayton

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team heads back out on the road starting at Dayton on Friday, Feb. 12 at 5 p.m. inside UD Arena. The Spiders resume play after a COVID pause that forced two home games to be postponed.
ABOUT DAYTON
Dayton is on a nine-game winning streak that started with a 56-47 win against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 1. The Flyers hold a perfect 9-0 mark in A-10 play and are 3-0 at home. Jenna Giacone leads the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game and Erin Whalen is second in scoring at 12.7 points per game. A-10 Rookie of the Week Tenin Magassa is third in scoring at 9.6 points per game. Whalen leads the team in three-pointers made with 22 and Giacone is second with 20 three-pointers made. In their previous game, Dayton earned a road win at La Salle 95-66 on Feb. 7. The Flyers set the tone outscoring La Salle, 26-9, in the first quarter. Dayton shot 50.0 percent (9-for-18) from the three-point line and had four players finish in double-figures.
HISTORY AGAINST DAYTON
This will be the 28th all-time meeting between the two teams with Dayton leading the all-time series with a 17-10 record. Dayton has won 14 games in a row in the series, including both meetings last season. Richmond fell at the Robins Center 65-51on Jan. 12, 2020 and lost in the quarterfinals of the A-10 Championship against top-seeded Dayton, 79-68. In her final game as a Spider, Jaide Hinds-Clarke posted 20 points off 8-for-15 shooting. Dayton scored 33 points in the first quarter to take a 16-point lead and never looked back. Erin Whalen finished with 21 points off 6-for-7 shooting from the three-point line. The Flyers hit 13 three-pointers in the A-10 quarterfinal win and went on to win the A-10 Championship but didn't get to compete in the NCAA Tournament due to COVID-19 shutting down the tournament.
BUDNIK COLLECTS THIRD A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONOR
It is the third A-10 weekly award for Budnik after averaging 11.0 points per game, 3.7 rebounds per game, four blocks per game and 1.66 assists per game. Budnik shot 50.0 percent from the field (13-for-26) in three wins last week and helped Richmond earn two more road wins at George Washington (W, 60-49) and at George Mason (W, 67-52). The Highland Park, Ill. native, finished the week strong with 13 points in the win at George Washington and 16 points in the win at George Mason.
PERFECT A-10 ROAD RECORD FOR THE SPIDERS
The Spiders improved to 5-0 on the road with a 67-52 win at George Mason on Jan. 31. It is the first time Richmond has started 5-0 in A-10 play. The A-10 road streak started with two close wins at St. Bonaventure (W, 59-58) and at Duquesne (W, 80-78). The Spiders defeated VCU on the road 69-64 on Jan. 24. UR then took down George Washington, 60-49, on Jan. 29 before a 15-point win at Mason.
THIRD QUARTER PROVES TO BE BEST QUARTER FOR SPIDERS
Richmond is 10-1 this season when they hold a lead after three quarters and have outscored opponents 241-193 (+48) in the third in 14 games. In the road win against VCU, UR outscored VCU, 23-11, after trailing by nine at halftime. In the home win against George Mason, the Spiders outscored George Mason, 25-15, in a wire-to-wire win. UR outscored Mason on the road, 23-11, to open up a 22-point lead. Richmond has only been outscored in the third quarter three times in 14 games.
SEASON HIGH 86 POINTS IN WIN AGAINST GEORGE MASON
For the second time this season, Richmond has scored 80-plus points after scoring 86 in a win against George Mason on Jan. 26. Earlier in the season, UR scored 85 in a win against Gardner-Webb. The 86 points is the most scored by Richmond since scoring 100 points in a win against Savannah State in 2017. The Spiders started fast with a 21-8 first quarter lead against the Patriots.
