Spiders Drop Road Game At Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Richmond women's basketball team was outrebounded 51-23 and never recovered in a 72-54 road loss Friday night at Dayton. The Flyers, who are receiving votes in the top-25, improved to 10-0 in the Atlantic 10.
Richmond ended its four-game winning streak and snapped a perfect 5-0 road record with the 18-point loss against Dayton. The Spiders are 10-5 overall and still hold a 7-3 A-10 mark. Rebounding proved to be the difference in the game as Dayton finished with 27 offensive rebounds which led to 28 second chance points. Both teams hit six three-pointers and Richmond shot 41.7 percent from the field (20-for-48).
Freshman Addie Budnik (Highland Park, Ill.) led the team with 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Budnik went 3-for-6 from the three-point line. Junior Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) added 12 points and was 5-for-13 from the field. Senior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) finished with nine points and three assists. Freshman Grace Townsend (Midlothian, Va.) had eight points, two steals and three assists off the bench.
Dayton was led by Mariah Perez who posted her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Perez had 11 offensive rebounds and dished out four assists. Erin Whalen added 13 points off 4-for-6 from the three-point line. The Flyers have won 15 games in a row against the Spiders.
The Flyers opened the game with a 10-3 lead off a fast break layup from Araion Bradshaw. Richmond answered with back-to-back three-pointers from Parson and Budnik to cut the lead to 10-9. The Spiders again got within one point at 12-11 off a layup from Klimkiewicz. With 2:35 left in the quarter, Budnik drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 14-14. The Flyers outscored Richmond, 7-2 to take a 21-16 lead after one quarter.
UR started the second quarter strong as Klimkiewicz made a couple of layups to make the score 23-22. The Flyers stepped up defensively and went on an 11-0 run to push their lead to 34-22 capped by a jumper from Jenna Giacone. Richmond scored five points to end the quarter but Dayton built a 40-27 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Spiders didn't score until a three-pointer from Klimkiewicz went in at the five-minute mark. UR just couldn't get shots to fall finishing the third quarter just 18.8 percent from the field (3-for-16) and were just 1-for-7 from downtown. Richmond was outscored 18-8 by Dayton to put the game away.
The Spiders started the fourth quarter on fire scoring nine points in less than three minutes. The big run forced Dayton to put their starters back into the game but Richmond still won the fourth quarter scoring 19 points. Budnik scored five of her 13 points in the quarter. Townsend added four points and was 2-for-3 from the field in the fourth quarter. UR got within 16 points but Dayton was able to hold on for a 72-54 home win.
Richmond continues on the road heading out to face Saint Louis on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. eastern time.
