Football Falls To No. 7 James Madison, 19-3

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team suffered its fourth-straight loss Saturday as the Spiders fell to seventh ranked James Madison 19-3 at Robins Stadium. The Spiders hit the road for two-straight games, beginning next Saturday travelling to Stony Brook.
Richmond's defense held the Dukes to only one touchdown in the loss. The Spiders held the Dukes to 100 yards rushing, nearly 100 yards under JMU's conference leading average. Freshman cornerback Angelo Rankin (Wichita, Kan.) led the way with a career-high 11 tackles while linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) added 10 tackles. Redshirt senior defensive lineman Kobie Turner (Clifton, Va.) posted a season-high 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack and forced one fumble in the impressive performance.
Richmond (2-4, 0-3 CAA) was limited to 188 yards of total offense. The Spiders rushed for 105 yards while being held to 83 yards passing. Redshirt sophomore Savon Smith (Winchester, Va.) led with 43 yards on eight carries. Graduate quarterback Beau English (Stevenson, Md.) was 4-of-10 for 53 yards while redshirt freshman Jackson Hardy (Atlanta, Ga.) was 4-of-7 for 30 yards in the loss.
James Madison (5-1, 3-1 CAA) scored the first 13 points of the game, taking advantage of a Spider turnover setting up the first points of the day. The lone touchdown came late in the first quarter when Solomon Vanhorse rushed in from 25-yards out.
The Spiders got on the board late in the second quarter. English started the drive with a 34-yard pass from redshirt freshman Jasiah Williams (Petersburg, Va.), putting the Spiders in the JMU territory. Smith added a 22-yard rush down to the Dukes' 20-yard line where the Spiders were unable to find the end zone. Redshirt sophomore Jake Larson (Baltimore, Md.) connected on a 40-yard field goal, making it a 13-3 contest.
The second half saw both offenses slowed by the rainy conditions. The Spiders were held off the board in the second half while James Madison was limited to only two field goals in the final 30 minutes.
