10/23/2021 | Football
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Richmond football team committed six turnovers Saturday and the Spiders were unable to climb out of the hole falling 27-14 to Stony Brook at LaValle Stadium in Colonial Athletic Association Action. Despite the miscues, the Spiders had the ball inside the SBU 10-yard line in the fourth quarter with a chance to pull within six, but were unable to find the end zone seeing the comeback fall short.
The Spiders' defense again was strong enough to win, limiting the Seawolves to 308 yards of total offense. Richmond held Stony Brook to 82 yards rushing, 102 yards under the Seawolves average. The Spiders held the CAA's leading rusher Ty Shon Lawton to only 51 yards on 22 carries.
The Spiders' three starting linebackers accounted for 32 tackles in the loss. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) led the way with a game-high 13 tackles. Redshirt junior linebacker Phil O'Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) filled in for the injured Tyler Dressler and recorded a career-high 11 tackles while Xavier Marshall (Charlotte, N.C.) added eight tackles including a sack.
Redshirt senior quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) returned early from his broken finger that forced him out since Sept. 25. Mancuso connected on 21-of-43 for 196 yards and a touchdown but threw two interceptions and lost one of the Spiders' four fumbles. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Jasiah Williams (Petersburg, Va.) caught a career-high 10 passes for 95 yards. Redshirt junior running back Aaron Dykes added 57 yards rushing on 10 carries and a touchdown, but tallied two uncharacteristic fumbles in the loss.
Stony Brook (3-5, 2-3 CAA) scored the first 20 points of the game, taking advantage of three Spider turnovers in the first half. The Seawolves turned those miscues into 10 points taking a 20-0 lead into the locker room.
Richmond (2-5, 0-4 CAA) got on the board in the third quarter, putting together an 11-play, 65-yard drive resulting in a two-yard touchdown run from Dykes. The Spiders defense forced a SBU punt on the ensuing possession but Mancuso fumbled on a third down play in the Spiders' own end giving the ball back to Stony Brook. The Seawolves converted that turnover into a touchdown for a 27-7 lead early in the fourth.
Freshman Angelo Rankin (Wichita, Kan.) tallied his first career interception on the Seawolves' next possession. The Spiders drove down the field and Mancuso hit Savon Smith (Winchester, Va.) on a six-yard scoring strike making it a 27-14 contest.
The Spider defense forced a three and out, getting the ball back to the offense. Richmond again drove down into the red zone and got to the four-yard line on a pass to Williams on first down. Mancuso's next pass into the end zone was intended for Williams but SBU's Randy Pringle intercepted it ending the Spiders' rally.
Richmond continues its road swing next weekend travelling to New Hampshire for a 1 p.m. kickoff in the Granite State.
